Beschreibung

L.M. Montgomery’s The Blue Castle is a deeply romantic and quietly rebellious novel about a woman who dares to break free from the life others have chosen for her. Set in the rugged beauty of early 20th-century Ontario, it follows Valancy Stirling, a timid and overlooked woman of twenty-nine whose days are dictated by her overbearing family and the stifling social codes of her small town. Her only escape lies in her vivid daydreams of the Blue Castle—a place where she imagines herself free, bold, and loved.     When Valancy receives unexpected news that shatters her perception of time and safety, she makes the first daring choice of her life: to live honestly and for herself. She leaves behind everything familiar and scandalizes her relatives by befriending outcasts, challenging norms, and eventually striking out into the wilderness with a mysterious man known as Barney Snaith. What begins as a retreat from the world becomes a profound journey toward love, self-discovery, and quiet joy in a life lived authentically.     First published in 1926, The Blue Castle is one of Montgomery’s few adult novels, but it pulses with the same emotional intelligence, humor, and lyricism that made Anne of Green Gables a classic. This Classicus edition reintroduces a tale that is by turns dreamy, defiant, and tender—a novel that speaks to anyone who has ever longed to escape, to reinvent, or to finally choose happiness on their own terms.

Jennie Gerhardt is the tragic story of an innocent, caring, beautiful young girl from an extremely poor family who throughout her life is drawn into affairs with two different men from a much higher social class. How members of her family, the family of one of the wealthy men, and society in general react to her situation is the basis of this classic story.
Jennie Gerhardt was Theodore Dreiser’s first true commercial success and is generally regarded as one of his best novels.

Pride, justice, and vengeance. Aristocracy and democracy vie for ultimate power over Rome, and each faction violently erupts when Coriolanus takes the political stage. After receiving glorious accolades for taking an enemy city when the plebian soldiers cowered without the gates, the common people find his arrogance and pride offensive. Now, banished from the very city for which he was prepared to lay down his life, he strikes up an unholy alliance with his country's enemies. His intent is clear - to wreak upon Rome the full magnitude of his unparalleled revenge.

Three years ago, BJ Harrison revolutionized the Shakespeare/audiobook format in his groundbreaking production of Hamlet. Now he brings the perhaps lesser known but equally powerful Tragedy of Coriolanus onto the audio stage.

Not only is the text well interpreted and presented, the play has been optimized for the audiobook format. To make the text more understandable in the audio format, an introduction is read at the beginning of each act. Also, each speaker is clearly marked with his own voice and narrative tags. This is the perfect way to discover the wonders of Shakespeare in an audio format. Students and Shakespeare veterans alike will enjoy this powerful production.

Franz Kafka was born on 3rd July 1883 in Prague, then in Bohemia, the eldest of 6, into a middle-class Jewish family.
Life for the young Kafka and his passion for literature was often made an ordeal by his over-bearing and domineering entrepreneur of a father.
In 1889 Kafka was sent to the Deutsche Knabenschule, an elementary school in Prague. His father would only allow him to be educated in German-speaking schools and even went so far as to limit visits to the synagogue to four a year.
In 1901 he graduated from the classics-oriented Altstädter Gymnasium. Kafka did well there and across a large range of subjects. He now enrolled at the Charles Ferdinand University, to study chemistry, but quickly switched to law for which he obtained his degree in June 1906 and then performed the mandatory year of unpaid service as clerk at the civil and criminal courts.
A job at an Italian insurance company left him little time to write and after a year he took another job with the Worker's Accident Insurance Institute for the Kingdom of Bohemia where he stayed until ill health led to his resignation in 1922.
Although he saw work as a means to pay the bills and to allow him time to write, he received several promotions and was noted as a good employee.
By 1917 Kafka was suffering from tuberculosis, which required frequent periods of convalescence. Interspersed with this, were several intense affairs before he settled in Berlin with Dora Diamant, a 25-year-old kindergarten teacher who herself having left the ghetto now influenced Kafka's interest in the book of Jewish law, the Talmud.

Kafka’s on-going health was littered with problems. Apart from TB there were several other ailments, including migraines, insomnia, boils, depression, all usually brought on by excessive stresses and strains. He attempted to counteract all of this by naturopathic treatments, a vegetarian diet and consuming large quantities of unpasteurized milk.
His tuberculosis still worsened. He returned to Prague, where he died on 3rd June 1924. He was 40.

Though he is most often remembered as the architect of the modern tale of terror, Edgar Allan Poe's short fiction ranges far beyond the confines of the macabre. In these 13 selected stories, he deals not merely with fear, but with consciousness itself: its obsessions, its perversities, its fragile hold upon identity, memory, and reason.
Ligeia – A meditation on beauty, intellect, and the terrifying possibility that the will may conquer death itself.
Berenice – A stark study of monomania, in which intellectual obsession descends into horror.
Eleonora – A gentle tale, exploring idealised love, memory, and the redemptive power of beauty.
Morella – A dark philosophical romance concerning the persistence of the self beyond death.
Three Sundays in a Week – A playful tale of ingenuity and deception.
The Imp of the Perverse – Poe’s chilling exploration of the irrational impulse that drives us toward self-destruction.
The Assignation – A tale of passion and fatalism, set against a decaying aristocratic world .
The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar – A disturbing experiment at the border of life and death, told with clinical precision.
The Cask of Amontillado – A masterclass in cool revenge, where pride, cruelty, and calculation lead to perfect atrocity.
Silence – A Fable – A haunting parable about the terror of absolute stillness.
Shadow – A Parable – A solemn meditation on death and inevitability.
The Man of the Crowd – An early exploration of urban alienation and the unsettling mystery of the unknowable individual.
Some Words with a Mummy – A sharp satire skewering modern arrogance through an encounter with the ancient past.
