Summary

In "The History of Rome, Books 09 to 26," Livy presents a meticulous account of Rome's expansion and moral evolution from the late republic to the height of its imperial ambitions. This work, infused with Livy's unique narrative style, combines historical accuracy with rhetorical flourish, effectively engaging readers while reinforcing the moral lessons of Roman history. Livy deftly weaves themes of virtue, fate, and the consequences of human actions into a tapestry that reflects the socio-political landscape of his time, particularly during the tumultuous years leading to the fall of the republic. His attention to detail and character development provide a vivid portrayal of key figures and events, offering invaluable insights into the dynamics that shaped Rome. Titus Livius, known simply as Livy, was an eminent Roman historian whose writings profoundly impacted the understanding of Roman identity and morality. Living during the reign of Augustus, Livy was influenced by the political climate of the early empire, likely driving his reflections on Rome's past glory and its challenges, including moral decay and civil strife. His work stands as both a historical document and a commentary on the values he cherished, embodied in the narratives he crafted. For readers fascinated by ancient history or the intricacies of human behavior, Livy's "The History of Rome, Books 09 to 26" is an essential read. It not only provides an extensive overview of Rome's political and military exploits but also serves as a cautionary tale about the virtues necessary for the longevity of any society. This book invites reflection on the past while resonating with contemporary themes, making it timeless in its relevance.

World War I, also known in its time as the “Great War” or the “War to End all Wars”, was an unprecedented holocaust in terms of its sheer scale. Fought by men who hailed from all corners of the globe, it saw millions of soldiers do battle in brutal assaults of attrition which dragged on for months with little to no respite. Tens of millions of artillery shells and untold hundreds of millions of rifle and machine gun bullets were fired in a conflict that demonstrated man’s capacity to kill each other on a heretofore unprecedented scale, and as always, such a war brought about technological innovation at a rate that made the boom of the Industrial Revolution seem stagnant.
The enduring image of World War I is of men stuck in muddy trenches, and of vast armies deadlocked in a fight neither could win. It was a war of barbed wire, poison gas, and horrific losses as officers led their troops on mass charges across No Man’s Land and into a hail of bullets. While these impressions are all too true, they hide the fact that trench warfare was dynamic and constantly evolving throughout the war as all armies struggled to find a way to break through the opposing lines.
There was another war going on beneath the trenches, a war of tunnels and mines fought by men who didn’t see sunlight for days at a time and who lived in constant fear of cave-ins and enemy detection. These men, who had mostly been miners in civilian life, lived a twilight existence, working long hours in silence and near darkness while great battles raged overhead. They suffered from fatigue, stress, and the knowledge that they could be killed at any time by an unseen enemy. Despite this, they persevered, and the mines they laid under enemy trench systems turned the tide of at least one major battle.

The extraordinary story of a headmaster turned cryptographer, and our top-secret war with the Kaiser's Reich.

On 11 August 1914, just days after war had been declared, Australian Captain J.T. Richardson boarded a German merchant vessel fleeing Melbourne's Port Phillip and audaciously seized a top-secret naval codebook. The fledgling Australian Navy had an opportunity to immediately change the course of the war. But what exactly had they found? Enter the Australian code breakers ...
Recruited by savvy top brass, maths whizz and German speaker Frederick Wheatley worked night and day to fathom the basic principles of the code and start tracking the German Navy's powerful East Asia Squadron, led by the brilliant Maximilian von Spee. Soon Melbourne was a hub of international Allied intelligence.
This is the untold story of how a former Australian headmaster and his mostly female team cracked one of Germany's most complex codes, paving the way for the greatest Allied naval victory of World War I.

What does it mean to be white? Beyond just a skin colour, is it also a way of thinking? If so, how did it come about, and why?

In this book, drawing on history, personal experience and activist literature, the former footballer and World Champion Lilian Thuram looks at the origins and workings of white thinking, how it divides us and how it has become ubiquitous and accepted without challenge. He demonstrates how centuries of white bias and denial justified slavery and colonialism, and have reinforced norms and structures of oppression, limiting the roles and horizons of both non-whites and whites alike.
Crucially, while White Thinking is a critique of ingrained structural inequities, it calls for an inclusive approach to solving the problem, and aims to raise awareness and imagine a new world in which all of humanity is given equal weight.
“White Thinking patiently demonstrates… how European societies, through their creation of Black people, also invented White people.” LE MONDE
“Strikes another blow in his battle against racial stereotypes.” LA VIE
“This book is not interested in repentance or white guilt but in the ability to face up to historical reality and to the fact that others might have a very different understanding of that history.” REVUE DES DEUX MONDES
“He is almost unique amongst retired sportspeople, having left his old life behind him in the dressing room. Today, the activist has replaced the footballer.” LIBÉRATION

“Hearing Dr. Tweedy speak was less of a lecture and more of an open invitation to engage in a meaningful conversation with a passionate caregiver. Dr. Tweedy’s personal stories prompted a ton of reflection on compassion, mental health, patient-centered care, and our own identity-related biases. These insights are invaluable as we return to our clinical settings, better equipped to care with and for our patients.” — Megan Walsh, Program Manager DEI, Case Western Reserve University, Medical SchoolA NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE'S TOP TEN NONFICTION BOOKS OF THE YEARA LIBRARY JOURNAL BEST BOOK SELECTION • A BOOKLIST EDITORS' CHOICE BOOK SELECTIONThis program is read by the author. One doctor's passionate and profound memoir of his experience grappling with race, bias, and the unique health problems of black AmericansWhen Damon Tweedy begins medical school, he envisions a bright future where his segregated, working-class background will become largely irrelevant. Instead, he finds that he has joined a new world where race is front and center. The recipient of a scholarship designed to increase black student enrollment, Tweedy soon meets a professor who bluntly questions whether he belongs in medical school, a moment that crystallizes the challenges he will face throughout his career. Making matters worse, in lecture after lecture the common refrain for numerous diseases resounds, "More common in blacks than in whites."Black Man in a White Coat examines the complex ways in which both black doctors and patients must navigate the difficult and often contradictory terrain of race and medicine. As Tweedy transforms from student to practicing physician, he discovers how often race influences his encounters with patients. Through their stories, he illustrates the complex social, cultural, and economic factors at the root of many health problems in the black community. These issues take on greater meaning when Tweedy is himself diagnosed with a chronic disease far more common among black people. In this powerful, moving, and deeply empathic book, Tweedy explores the challenges confronting black doctors, and the disproportionate health burdens faced by black patients, ultimately seeking a way forward to better treatment and more compassionate care.A Macmillan Audio production from Picador.
