Synopsis

How can parents take back their power to discover and develop the best way to parent for their child?By hitting the pause button, shutting out all the noise that tells them how they should parent, and building the confidence to create the relationship that best nurtures and supports their children’s well-being and independence.Three years into parenting, Lisa Anderson realized that the way she was parenting wasn’t healthy for her or her daughter. She sought counseling to help her figure it out, and so began her journey of discovering the best parenting approach for her child.Lisa had her work cut out for her. When her daughter was six, the advisors at her school expressed concern that she had ADHD. Lisa took her to a psychologist who, after months of testing, diagnosed her with BRAT syndrome. “It took me a minute to realize what he meant—she was a brat.”It was at this point that Lisa realized she had never said “no” to her daughter, not because she thought it was best for her daughter, but because that’s what she knew.“I was going to create a little monster if I didn’t change my way of thinking and shift my focus from what I needed to what my daughter needed.”It was a difficult concept to understand, and an even more challenging task to achieve, but through her work on her own trauma coupled with her education and experience in social work and counseling, Lisa figured it out. Not the way to be a perfect parent, but the way to be the best parent for her child. Isn’t that what every parent really wants and what every child deserves?Fear, guilt, and social pressures are driving parents to be over-involved and their children to be overscheduled and overstressed. Children’s freedom to develop their autonomy is being restricted under the guise of keeping them safe from things we simply cannot control. Hypervigilant parenting comes at a significant cost to all of us, as is evident through the increasing number of anxious and depressed children and the emerging adults who lack the confidence and the skills to be self-sufficient. Somewhere along the way we have forgotten that our number one job as parents is to raise our children to be capable, independent adults.Something needs to change.

The Cherokee are among the native tribes of the United States' Southeastern Woodlands. They resided in communities along river valleys in what's now southwestern North Carolina, southeastern Tennessee, the limits of western South Carolina, northern Georgia, and northeastern Alabama just before the 18th century.
Cherokee belongs to the Iroquoian language family. One oral legend tells of the people moving south in age-old times from the Great Lakes area, where other Iroquoian-speaking tribes were based, according to James Mooney, an early American ethnographer.

The rise of online education has been nothing short of revolutionary. Once considered an alternative to traditional schooling, it has now become a dominant force in the academic world. Institutions worldwide have embraced digital learning platforms, promising accessibility, affordability, and convenience. Students can earn degrees from prestigious universities without ever stepping into a classroom, and working professionals can upskill at their own pace. The appeal is undeniable, but beneath the surface, there are unsettling truths that often go unnoticed.

This book seeks to uncover the realities of online education—both its promises and its pitfalls. While it has opened doors for many, it has also introduced challenges that institutions and students alike struggle to address. The marketing around digital learning often highlights its flexibility and cost-effectiveness, but it rarely delves into issues such as hidden expenses, declining academic quality, and the mental health impact of isolated learning. Many students enroll in online programs believing they are receiving the same level of education as their on-campus counterparts, only to discover that the experience falls short of their expectations.

The influence of big tech companies has further complicated the landscape. These corporations play a major role in shaping the future of education, often prioritizing profits over student outcomes. From data privacy concerns to the rise of artificial intelligence in grading and instruction, online learning has become as much about business as it is about education. Meanwhile, employers remain skeptical about online degrees, leaving graduates questioning the true value of their qualifications.

The mythology of the Norsemen is a tapestry woven with gods, giants, heroes, and creatures, shaping the beliefs and culture of the Viking Age. Rooted in oral tradition, these stories were passed down through generations, evolving over time yet retaining their essence. Norse myths explain the creation of the world, the forces that govern existence, and the inevitable fate that awaits all beings, including the gods themselves. Unlike many mythologies that depict their deities as all-powerful, Norse mythology embraces the concept of struggle, destiny, and the impermanence of even the mightiest figures.

At the heart of Norse mythology is a pantheon of gods divided into two main groups: the Aesir and the Vanir. The Aesir, led by Odin, are associated with war, wisdom, and governance, while the Vanir, including Freyja and Njord, are linked to fertility and prosperity. Though originally at odds, these two factions eventually united, reflecting the Viking worldview of balance between opposing forces. Alongside these deities are powerful figures such as Loki, the trickster, and the Norns, who weave the fates of gods and men alike.

The Norse cosmos is structured around Yggdrasil, the World Tree, which connects the Nine Realms. These include Asgard, the home of the gods; Midgard, the realm of humans; and Hel, the domain of the dead. This vast and interconnected universe embodies the Viking understanding of life as an intricate web of cause and effect, where fate is both inescapable and deeply intertwined with personal action.

A unique analysis of the numbers that came to define Chinese politics and how this quantification evolved over time.

For decades, a few numbers came to define Chinese politics—until those numbers did not count what mattered and what they counted did not measure up. Seeking Truth and Hiding Facts argues that the Chinese government adopted a system of limited, quantified vision in order to survive the disasters unleashed by Mao Zedong's ideological leadership. Jeremy Wallace explains how that system worked and analyzes how the problems that accumulated in its blind spots led Xi Jinping to take drastic action. Xi's neopolitical turn—aggressive anti-corruption campaigns, reassertion of party authority, and personalization of power—is an attempt fix the problems of the prior system, as well as a hedge against an inability to do so. The book argues that while of course dictators stay in power through coercion and cooptation, they also do so by convincing their populations and themselves of their right to rule. Quantification is one tool in this persuasive arsenal, but it comes with its own perils.
