Beschreibung

Early Icons and Landmarks As western migration came to the Colorado frontier, forts were established to protect the settlers. These forts were intertwined with the lives of the frontiersmen. Scout Thomas Tate Tobin oversaw the workers who built the adobe fortress known as Fort Garland. Here, Tobin delivered the heads of the murderous Espinosas gang to Colonel Sam Tappan. Fort Sedgwick, originally known as Camp Rankin, was attacked by the Cheyenne Dog soldiers, including George Bent. Fort Lyon, an expanded fortress of William Bent's third fort, became the staging point for Colonel John M. Chivington's march to Sand Creek where peaceful Cheyenne were murdered. Later, Christopher "Kit" Carson died in the fort's chapel. Legendary Jim Beckwourth was associated with both Fort Vasquez and Fort Pueblo. Author Linda Wommack revisits the glory and the mistakes of the frontiersmen who defined Colorado and the forts that dotted the wild landscape.

Democracy has been hanging by a thread for a while, and is close to collapsing, so what can be done about it? Andrew Yang stitched together Forward from all the lessons he learned in his political journey in hopes of inspiring deep political thought in readers. Yang ran for president and continued his political activism after dropping out of the race. He believes that his efforts have helped to incite change and implement bold ideas, which he explains in detail. Many Americans have a sense that the American system is failing, and so does Yang, which is why he argues that immediate change is necessary, and it cannot be done without national support.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE NED KELLEY AWARD FOR BEST TRUE CRIME

How the New South Wales Police Force's finest solved murders in one of the most tumultuous periods in Australian history.

As Australia sank into the darkest days of the Great Depression, a succession of bloody mysteries grabbed headlines and gripped the country. The Hammer Horror, The Bungendore Bones, The Park Demon, The Human Glove and The Pyjama Girl – these were just some of the grisly cases that had to be solved by the Sydney detectives of The Murder Squad.

With the people, press and politicians screaming for justice and vengeance, homicide chief Tom McRae and his colleagues used bold new investigative tools in the massive manhunts for these maniacal killers. Working under intense pressure, hard-nosed and hard-charging cops solved some cases brilliantly – yet others were 'closed' with dodgy convictions while several shadowy figures were to get away with murder.

Set against the backdrop of our greatest economic crisis, as the federal and state governments headed for a showdown and fascist and communist thugs threatened civil war, The Murder Squad reopens the files on Australia's most chilling forgotten crimes to ask who was guilty, who was innocent, and whether some cops were as dangerous as the monsters they were hunting.

This conflict between history and life summons ideas of strength, beauty, brutality, elegance and all manner of feelings and emotions in these miniature gems.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

In 1930, as a young woman, Christa Schroeder became a stenographer for the Nazi party, before being noticed by Hitler who, in 1933, hired her as his private secretary.

Schroeder remained by Hitler's side, fiercely loyal, for twelve years, living at the Wolfsschanze and even joining him and his staff in the Führerbunker in Berlin in January 1945.

In 1945, interned in the Augsburg camp, Christa Schroeder was interrogated by French liaison officer Albert Zoller who asked her to recount her years spent with the Führer. Schroeder's testimony, published here in the form of interviews with Zollers, gives an intimate, astonishing, and incredibly detailed insight into the private life and personality of Adolf Hitler throughout the 1930s and 1940s.

An exceptional testimony, Twelve Years With Hitler is an essential source document on Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler. Translated into English here for the first time, Albert Zoller's interviews with Christa Schroeder are guaranteed to shock and fascinate any military history enthusiast.
