Synopsis

Sumerian Calendar explores the origins of timekeeping with the first recorded calendar system developed in Mesopotamia. This world history book reveals how profoundly the Sumerian calendar, with its lunar cycles and adjustments for the solar year, influenced agriculture, religious festivals, and administration within Sumerian society. Intriguingly, this early system laid the groundwork for calendars still in use today, highlighting the Sumerians' deep understanding of astronomy. The book examines the calendar's structure, its societal integration, and its lasting legacy, drawing on cuneiform texts and archaeological findings. Furthermore, it traces the calendar's influence on later civilizations like the Babylonians and Assyrians, and its connections to Hebrew and Greek calendars. This approach combines detailed calendar analysis with its social and cultural significance.

Organized to guide readers, the book first introduces the basics, then explores its use in Sumerian life, and finally, traces its influence on subsequent cultures.

Bat, Ball and Field is a wonderful foray into the history and culture of cricket.
‘Hotten is not just good, he is one of the best’ Cricketer
Chronicling the evolution of the sport since its earliest years, highlighting transcendent moments as well as tragedies, Jon Hotten lifts the seemingly impregnable veil from the Laws, batting strokes, types of bowling and the sometimes absurd names given to where fielders stand, allowing anyone a pathway into enjoying the sport, and an introductory immersion into its long history.
This book is divided into the three parts that make up the fundamental elements of cricket: bat, ball and field. Their harmony produces cricket’s unique environment; their centuries’ long conflict provides its innovation, adaptability and vast psychological hinterland. These sections unite to map out in a completely original way the story of the sport that began as a country pursuit and is now followed by billions across the world.
Hotten's autobiography is a humorous and insightful exploration of cricket's history in Britain and Europe. His popular writing style and deep understanding of the sport make this book a top pick for sports enthusiasts.
For fans of Shaun Assael (The Murder of Sonny Liston), Geoffrey C. Ward (Before the Trumpet), Stefan Szymanski (It's Football, Not Soccer), Tim Wigmore (Test Cricket), and Barry Johnston (The Wit of Cricket).

It was the great mystery of its time and still reads like an episode of “Law and Order” today. In December 1910, a wealthy young woman, thought to be sheltered and above reproach, goes missing shortly after being seen in broad daylight on Fifth Avenue in New York City. The police are called in and begin to question those closest to her, only to have her father, a wealthy manufacturer, insist it must be foul play and that his daughter was on good terms with her entire family. Likewise, he claims that though she was in her mid-20s and in the prime of life, she had no serious romantic attachments.
By the mid-1930s, Amelia Earhart was one of the most famous women in the world. The American pilot had set a number of altitude and distance records, but she wanted to attempt a circumnavigation of the world. After an ill-fated first attempt, Earhart and Fred Noonan set off on another attempt, creating one of the 20th century’s most enduring mysteries. Earhart and Noonan were to land on Howland Island, 1700 miles southwest of Hawaii, but radio transmissions ceased between the plane and authorities on the ground the morning of July 2, 1937. Earhart and Noonan had disappeared, never to be seen again, despite one of the nation’s largest and costliest manhunts to date.
On November 24, 1971, there was little to suggest that the skies above the Pacific Northwest would produce one of the greatest mysteries in American history and a criminal investigation that is still ongoing over 40 years later. However, on the day before Thanksgiving, a man calling himself Dan Cooper boarded Northwest Orient Flight 305 from Portland to Seattle and sat in the rear of the cabin. The identity of the thief who ransomed hostages and then jumped out of a plane with the money that night remains unknown. In fact, his ultimate fate is a mystery.
