Sinopse

Senegal River Hub explores how the Senegal River served as a pivotal center for early West African societies, fostering complex civilizations long before colonial influence. The book argues that the river’s predictable flooding enabled intensive agriculture and supported extensive trade networks, leading to the development of stratified societies. Intriguingly, the river wasn't just a source of sustenance; it was a catalyst for social and political organization, challenging conventional narratives that often overlook the agency of pre-colonial African communities. The book examines the evolution of adaptive agricultural practices, the establishment of interregional trade routes, and the emergence of sophisticated social structures.

Structured chronologically, the book first introduces the environmental context, then explores trade development, and finally analyzes the social and political structures that emerged. By synthesizing archaeological findings, historical accounts, and anthropological studies, Senegal River Hub provides a comprehensive understanding of this vital region's contributions to world history, offering insights into the dynamics of pre-colonial African societies.

Hurricane Michael may have taken away some of the landmarks, but this book reveals the history of Florida's Mexico Beach, once known as the "Unforgettable Coast."

As French interests in the Americas dwindled, records indicate very little activity around Mexico Beach until rumors of buried riches and sunken ships brought treasure hunters to the coast. In the early 1900s, businessman Felix du Pont purchased the land known today as Mexico Beach. Resin to make turpentine was harvested from the native pine trees, and fishermen could not resist the migratory fish passing through the area's waters. By the 1930s, United States Highway 98 was completed, and visitors could finally reach the sugar-soft sand beaches of the "Unforgettable Coast." By 1941, Tyndall Field was constructed and became a training site for Air Force pilots. In 1946, a group of farsighted businessmen, led by Gordan Parker, W.T. McGowan, and J.W. Wainwright, purchased 1,850 acres along the beach for $65,000. Parker's son Charlie moved to the area in 1949 with his wife, Inky, and their family. He soon took over development responsibilities for the Mexico Beach Corporation and laid the groundwork for the beach town known and loved today. Charlie went on to become the city's first mayor and a lifelong advocate of the family-friendly community.

Drawing on archeological and ethno-historical evidence, Irving Rouse sketches a picture of the Tainos—the first people Columbus encountered when he arrived in the Americas—as they existed during the time of Columbus, contrasting their customs with those of their neighbors. He then moves backward in time to the ancestors of the Tainos—two successive groups who settled the West Indies and who are known to archeologists as the Saladoid peoples and the Ostionoid peoples. By reconstructing the development of these groups and studying their interaction with other groups during the centuries before Columbus, Rouse shows precisely who the Tainos were. He vividly recounts Columbus's four voyages, the events of the European contact, and the early Spanish views of the Tainos, particularly their art and religion. The narration shows that the Tainos did not long survive the advent of Columbus. Weakened by forced labor, malnutrition, and diseases introduced by the foreigners, and dispersed by migration and intermarriage, they ceased to exist as a separate population group.

As Rouse discusses the Tainos' contributions to the Spaniards—from Indian corn, tobacco, and rubber balls to art, artifacts, and new words—we realize that their effect on Western civilization, brief through their contact, was an important and lasting one.
