Synopsis

Qing Collapse examines the multifaceted reasons behind the downfall of China's Qing Dynasty, a pivotal moment in world history. The book argues that the collapse wasn't due to a single cause but rather a combination of internal vulnerabilities and external pressures. Intriguingly, despite ruling for nearly three centuries, the dynasty struggled to adapt to challenges like the Opium Wars and internal rebellions such as the Taiping Rebellion, ultimately leading to its demise.

The book provides a nuanced perspective by analyzing the dynasty's political structure, economic system, and social fabric, highlighting inherent weaknesses like bureaucratic corruption. It progresses by exploring the impact of internal rebellions and foreign intervention, followed by an assessment of the Qing government's reform attempts and concluding with an analysis of the Xinhai Revolution. This approach provides a comprehensive understanding of why the Qing Dynasty could not withstand the combined forces of internal dissent and foreign encroachment, offering valuable insights into the dynamics of imperial collapse and the challenges of modernization.

The Heroides, also known as the Heroines, the Letters of the Heroines or simply as Epistles are a very famous collection of poems by Ovid, not only for their interesting subject - letters by famous mythological characters addressed to their beloved ones - but also because it's considered by some the first example of the Epistle as a literary genre - a statement made by Ovid himself in his Ars Amatoria. The book as we have it nowadays consists of 21 letters, divided in two parts. The first is composed of fifteen letters presented as if written by a female mythological character to her lover; the second part, also known as Double Heroides, brings three pairs of letters, being the first in each pair supposedly written by a hero, and the second one, the heroine's response to the first letter. Along the Metamorphoses and the Ars Amatoria, the Heroides were one of the most influential works of Ovid, not only in the Antiquity, but also throughout the Middle Ages and up to Modern times.        'Donoghue was alert to the idea of the unsayable, as he circled around the idea of language itself as pliable material, all the more beautiful for that and worthy of our full consideration, but yielding at times to further levels of mystery...' from foreword by Colm Tóibín
In this last written work, the internationally renowned Irish literary critic Denis Donoghue brings an acute critical intelligence to bear on the late novels of Henry James. One of the greatest novelists in the English language, Henry James (1843-1916) was an American-British author who is regarded as a key transitional figure between literary realism and literary modernism.
James's The Portrait of a Lady (1881) was the central achievement of his early period. The Turn of the Screw (1898) was a high-point of Gothic literature. In The Correction of Taste, Denis Donoghue offers a close reading of James's final novels, taking as his starting point an observation by T.S. Eliot about the function of literary criticism. Exploring a succession of works such as The Ambassadors (1903), The Wings of the Dove (1902) and The Golden Bowl (1905), Donoghue brings into sharp focus the complex layers of James's literary genius.

From the Duck Dynasty star and #1 New York Times bestselling author comes a rollicking popular history of fishing in America.
American Fisherman traces the impact fishing has had in shaping America’s history, and reveals the influential role it has played in defining our lives. Willie Robertson persuasively argues that America became what it is today in no small part because of the anglers that call it home. From harvesting New England cod to fly fishing for Yellowstone trout to raising Pacific Northwest salmon, the fishing industry has long played an essential role in the establishment of many of the nation’s earliest ports, most notably along the East Coast. Robertson explores how fishing has informed our culture, in literature, movies, and television, from classics like The Old Man and the Sea, A River Runs Through It, and Moby-Dick to The Perfect Storm, In the Heart of the Sea, and The Deadliest Catch, to popular local television fishing programs from coast to coast.
Robertson also analyzes the economics of this $50 billion annual business which supports a host of industries, including tourism and manufacturing, as well as conservationism. Told in Robertson’s charming down-home voice, American Fisherman is a spirited and unique look at America and its people.

Henri Bergson’s Laughter: An Essay on the Meaning of the Comic stands as one of the most influential explorations of humor ever written. First published in the early 20th century, this groundbreaking philosophical essay examines why we laugh, what we find funny, and how the comic reveals deeper truths about human nature and society.
Bergson argues that laughter is more than amusement — it is a social act, a subtle corrective that highlights rigidity, absent-mindedness, and mechanical behavior in human life. Through vivid examples and sharp analysis, he uncovers the hidden logic behind comedy, showing how humor exposes the delicate interplay between individuality and the social order.
Narrated with clarity and sophistication by Luke Oldham, this audiobook brings Bergson’s timeless insights to life, offering listeners a fresh perspective on the everyday comic moments that shape our shared human experience.
Perfect for lovers of philosophy, psychology, literature, and anyone curious about why we laugh — and what our laughter truly means.
