Synopsis

Ode Traditions explores the captivating journey of the ode, a poetic form that mirrors centuries of cultural values and societal shifts. From its roots in ancient Greece and Rome as formal expressions of public praise, the ode evolved into a versatile tool for personal reflection and complex social commentary. The book highlights how odes served as vehicles for expressing power dynamics and adapted across historical periods, revealing the enduring capacity to convey profound emotional and intellectual insights.

The book begins by establishing the foundational characteristics of the ode, then traces its development through the medieval period and the Renaissance. A significant portion of Ode Traditions analyzes the ode's flourishing in the 17th and 18th centuries, with particular attention paid to its use in celebrating national identity, commemorating historical events, and engaging in political discourse.

This literary history examines various odes, providing close readings and detailed analyses of their form, content, and historical significance. Offering an interdisciplinary analysis of the ode's historical development, the book is valuable to those seeking a deeper understanding of poetry's evolution and its significance as a reflection of cultural values and societal change.

    MacArthur Reconsidered - General...

One of America's most controversial generals, Douglas MacArthur's rise through the US Army's ranks was meteoric. However, he did not lead large formations of men in combat until he assumed command of forces in the Philippines in 1941. When war commenced with the bombing of Pearl Harbor, MacArthur's performance on the battlefield was a failure: he underestimated the Japanese, and his poorly trained forces were outmaneuvered and outfought by a much smaller invading force.

In his subsequent role as America's shogun in Tokyo, MacArthur was again surprised by an enemy he underestimated. The Korean War yielded his greatest victory, at Inchon, but also his greatest defeat, along the Yalu River. Unwilling to accept anything but complete victory, he openly defied President Truman: MacArthur fatally undermined chances for an early peace and attempted to widen a conflict which threatened to become a third world war. Raging against his subsequent firing, he only truly faded away after he was publicly criticized by a panoply of America's greatest WWII generals.

Today, MacArthur still polarizes. Many biographies agree he was a great and patriotic leader marred by a few failures. James Ellman argues the opposite: MacArthur was a lackluster battlefield commander who suffered stunning defeats while undermining the command structure of our military.

    Hope Circuits - Rewiring...

How do we model abundance and generosity — in teaching, in learning, in leading organizations, particularly non-profits — when dealing with fiscal austerity and other forms of scarcity thinking? Hope Circuits explores this question, presenting sophisticated ideas that support democratizing higher education for everybody.

Written in a conversational style that draws upon Jessica Riddell’s experience in governance, senior administration, and scholarship, the book is a how-to guide and thought leadership manifesto for developing the conceptual tools to seek solutions to higher education’s most pressing issues. Hope Circuits aims to rewire mindsets, perspectives, and behaviours to in turn rewire and renew the systems within which university stakeholders learn, live, and work. It tackles this challenging feat by suggesting ten tools to build hope circuits, a concept borrowed from neuroscience.

Riddell acknowledges that changing systems and deep cultures is not for the faint of heart; indeed, the more than 250 interviews conducted with thought partners for Hope Circuits expose how individuals who navigate complex systems regularly experience discomfort and even despair. In response, she shows us how to anchor a practice of hope in higher education with focus and intention, inviting others to adopt and adapt her approach.
