Synopsis

Japanese Time explores the deep connection between a nation's cultural identity and its sense of time, focusing on the intriguing evolution of Japanese calendars. From ancient lunar cycles borrowed from China to the adoption of the Gregorian calendar during the Meiji-era, the book highlights the adaptation, resistance, and cultural negotiations that have shaped Japan's historical evolution. Early Sino-Japanese relations, indigenous religious practices, and a centralized bureaucratic state all played a crucial role in the implementation of calendrical decrees. The book argues that Japan's shifting calendars reflect a continuous tension between internal cultural preservation and external pressures for modernization and standardization. Japanese Time emphasizes that the adoption of the Gregorian calendar during the Meiji-era was not necessarily a complete break from the past, as traditional cultural patterns persisted.

The book progresses chronologically and thematically, beginning with the fundamental concepts of lunar and lunisolar calendars and concluding with an analysis of the long-term implications of calendar reform on Japanese identity in a globalized world. The book examines the influence of Chinese calendrical science on early Japanese society, the unique Japanese adaptations within the traditional calendar, and the political and social upheavals surrounding the Meiji-era adoption of the Gregorian calendar. By examining historical documents, government records, diaries, and literature, this book offers a comprehensive examination of Japanese calendars, considering their technical aspects and broader cultural, social, and political implications.

Julius Franklin Howell was born in Suffolk, Virginia, in 1846. He enlisted in the Confederate States Army in 1862 and served in the 24th Virginia Cavalry until 1864 when his regiment was moved to the north of Richmond as Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant fought near Petersburg. Howell took part in the cavalry charge against Union artillery and infantry at a clearing near the Darbytown Road, during which he was shot in the leg. After his recovery, Howell returned to fight and was captured at the Battle of Sailor's Creek in Amelia County, Virginia, on April 6, 1865, and held in a Union prison at Point Lookout, MD. when he heard about the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. After the war, he became an educator, preserving the memories of the Confederate soldier and serving as Commander-in-Chief of the United Confederate Veterans for decades. In 1947, he gave the following recording about his wartime experiences. He died a year later at the age of 102.

The ability of the world system to conquer and divide has always been based on its efforts to try to divide groups through skewed narratives and warped beliefs. The ultimate agenda of wicked men in power is to separate people because of social class, race, and status. While groups devour one another, those in power gain control by subjecting the people through programs and ideologies that are specifically designed to cause people to bow to the very men creating the narrative. These beliefs and narratives indoctrinate the people to operate in beliefs that place them in further bondage.
While the world system works to turn people into subjects, God searches for people who long to be set free from these bondages. His work starts inside those who seek a way of life that leads to greater freedom.  In this book, you will discover that all bondage is instigated from within. It exists within all humanity. It is beyond race, class, and society and it is the source and foundation of all evil that exists in the world. While today’s so-called relevant scientists, world governments, and global capitalists use biology and race as the key to world domination, the principles that produce the most freedom are found operating in those who acknowledge the will and purposes of the Creator. As you read this book take a journey that will illuminate your understanding and take you back to mankind’s true source of justice and liberty.

A searing portrait of a country in disarray and of the man at its helm, from "the bravest of Russian journalists" (The New York Times)Hailed as "a lone voice crying out in a moral wilderness" (New Statesman), Anna Politkovskaya made her name with her fearless reporting on the war in Chechnya. Here, she turned her steely gaze on the multiple threats to Russian stability, among them Vladimir Putin himself.Rich with characters and poignant accounts, Putin's Russia depicts a far-reaching state of decay. Politkovskaya describes an army in which soldiers die from malnutrition, parents must pay bribes to recover their dead sons' bodies, and conscripts are even hired out as slaves. She exposes rampant corruption in business, government, and the judiciary, where everything from store permits to bus routes to court appointments is for sale. And she offers a scathing condemnation of the war in Chechnya, where kidnappings, extra-judicial killings, rape, and torture beget terrorism rather than fighting it. Finally, Politkovskaya denounces both Putin, for stifling civil liberties as he pushes the country back to a Soviet-style dictatorship, and the West, for its unqualified embrace of the Russian leader.Sounding an urgent alarm, Putin's Russia is a gripping portrayal of a country in crisis and the testament of a great and intrepid reporter, who received death threats and survived assassination attempts for her scathing criticism of the Kremlin. Tragically, on October 7, 2006, Politkovskaya was shot and found dead in an elevator in her Moscow apartment building. After several years of investigations, five men were imprisoned for her murder.
