Beschreibung

Japanese Time explores the deep connection between a nation's cultural identity and its sense of time, focusing on the intriguing evolution of Japanese calendars. From ancient lunar cycles borrowed from China to the adoption of the Gregorian calendar during the Meiji-era, the book highlights the adaptation, resistance, and cultural negotiations that have shaped Japan's historical evolution. Early Sino-Japanese relations, indigenous religious practices, and a centralized bureaucratic state all played a crucial role in the implementation of calendrical decrees. The book argues that Japan's shifting calendars reflect a continuous tension between internal cultural preservation and external pressures for modernization and standardization. Japanese Time emphasizes that the adoption of the Gregorian calendar during the Meiji-era was not necessarily a complete break from the past, as traditional cultural patterns persisted.

The book progresses chronologically and thematically, beginning with the fundamental concepts of lunar and lunisolar calendars and concluding with an analysis of the long-term implications of calendar reform on Japanese identity in a globalized world. The book examines the influence of Chinese calendrical science on early Japanese society, the unique Japanese adaptations within the traditional calendar, and the political and social upheavals surrounding the Meiji-era adoption of the Gregorian calendar. By examining historical documents, government records, diaries, and literature, this book offers a comprehensive examination of Japanese calendars, considering their technical aspects and broader cultural, social, and political implications.

An often overlooked, yet very important, environmental process in world history is known as the “Late Antique Little Ice Age,” which took place during the 6th century A.D. across most of the Northern Hemisphere and received its name because it was shorter and less well-known than the Little Ice Age, which took place from the 16th-19th centuries. An examination of the written sources from the 6th century, along with archaeological and climatological information, reveals that the Late Antique Little Ice Age was a major event in world history that had long-lasting repercussions on numerous societies. Although it was not as long or as severe as the later Little Ice Age, the Late Antique Little Ice Age drastically impacted several advanced societies across the Northern Hemisphere, including in Europe, Central Asia, East Asia, and even North America. Perhaps the best-studied aspect of the Late Antique Little Ice Age is the role it played in the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and how it helped shape the composition of early medieval Europe. Some of these studies suggest that the Late Antique Little Ice Age played a major, if not the most important, role in the reformation of Western Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. Other studies suggest that the Late Antique Little Ice Age affected the political structure of late ancient societies in the Middle East and Arabia, helping to give rise to Islam. And finally, although the Late Antique Little Ice Age’s effects on East Asia and North America have not been studied nearly as much as its influence on Europe, the archaeological and some textual evidence – in the case of East Asia – suggest that the Late Antique Little Ice Age also affected how complex societies transitioned in those regions during the 6th century and later.

"...offers a unique and valuable insight into the psychology of human beings who violate the laws of war. Anyone interested in war crimes generally and the IMT in particular should read this interesting book." — Journal of Military HistoryA revealing yet accessible examination of the Nuremberg trial, and most crucially all 23 men who stood accused, not just the most infamous—Speer, Hess, and Göring. This account sets the scene by explaining the procedures, the legal context, and the moments of hypocrisy in the Allies’ prosecution—ignoring the fact that the Katyn massacre was a Soviet crime and overlooking carpet bombing. Author Andrew Sangster discusses how the word “Holocaust” was not used until long after the trial, probably due to Russian objection as they had lost many more people, and because the Allies generally were not innocent of anti-Semitism themselves, especially Russia and Vichy France. However, the defendants to a person immediately recognized that this was the singular issue which placed them on the steps of the gallows, and their various defenses on this charge are therefore crucial to understanding the trial. Sangster also explores how the prisoners related to one another in their approach to defending themselves on the charge of genocide and extermination camps, especially in facing the bully-boy Göring. This new study utilizes not only the trial manuscripts, but the pre-trial interrogations, the views of the psychiatrists and psychologists, and the often-overheard conversations between prisoners—who did not know their guards spoke German—to give the fullest exploration of the defendants, their state of mind, and their attitudes towards the Third Reich, Hitler and each other as they faced judgement by the victors of the war.

From the bestselling author of 21 Things™ You May Not Know About the Indian Act comes a powerful new book on dismantling the Indian Act and advancing Indigenous self-governance.Bob Joseph’s 21 Things™ You May Not Know About the Indian Act captured the attention of hundreds of thousands of Canadians by shining a light on the Indian Act and the problems associated with it. In that book, readers learned that the Consolidated Indian Act of 1876 has controlled the lives of Indigenous Peoples in Canada for generations, and despite its objective to assimilate Indians into the economic and political mainstream, it has had the opposite effect: segregation. They live under different laws and on different lands.People came away from that book with questions such as "Can we get rid of the Indian Act?" and "What would that look like? Would self-government work?" These are timely questions, given that 2026 will mark 150 years since the Consolidated Indian Act of 1876. The short answer to these questions is, yes, we can dismantle the Act, and there are current examples of self-government arrangements that are working. With his trademark wisdom, humility, and deep understanding, Bob Joseph shows us the path forward in 21 Things™ You Need to Know About Indigenous Self-Government: A Conversation About Dismantling the Indian Act, in which Indigenous self-governance is already happening and not to be feared—and negotiating more such arrangements, sooner rather than later, is an absolute necessity.21 Things™ You Need to Know About Indigenous Self-Government: A Conversation About Dismantling the Indian Act is a call to action.
