Summary

Historical Smuggling explores the pervasive influence of illicit trade, arguing it's not a marginal activity but a deeply embedded feature of global commerce and geopolitics. The book reveals how clandestine networks have profoundly shaped global history, particularly during conflicts, often acting as a catalyst for economic development, political upheaval, and warfare. For instance, the smuggling of precious metals in ancient times could destabilize empires, while modern arms smuggling fuels ongoing conflicts.

The book progresses by first defining key terms and historical conditions that foster smuggling. It then investigates case studies of smuggling networks across different regions and eras, analyzing their structures, methods, and interactions with governments. The book addresses economic drivers, the formation and operation of smuggling networks, and the geopolitical consequences of illicit trade.

Understanding these smuggling networks is crucial for interpreting events and informing decisions about contemporary international issues. Unique in its comprehensive, comparative analysis across different periods and regions, Historical Smuggling connects economics, political science, and criminology to provide a holistic understanding. It examines evidence from archival documents, trade statistics, and firsthand accounts, offering strategies for countering illicit trade. The book offers insights into trade regulation, border security, and international relations.

Since the 2002 implementation of No Child Left Behind, the American public education system has been fundamentally changed. Excessive testing, standardized curriculums, destructive demands on children, corporate-style evaluations, and top-down mandates have become the norm. In response, record numbers of demoralized educators have quit, and millions of students have been left educationally impoverished. This troubling transformation has been exhaustively critiqued by scholars and commentators. Yet one crucial voice has been missing.

In Testing Education, Kathy Greeley recounts the impact of education reform from a teacher's point of view. Based on a teaching career ranging nearly forty years, Greeley details how schools went from learning communities infused with excitement, intellectual stimulation, and joy to sterile spaces of stress, intimidation, and fear. In this ultimately hopeful memoir, Greeley asks us to learn from the past to reimagine the future of public education.

    Frederick Douglass and Harriet...

With the possible exception of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., no African American has been more instrumental in the fight for minorities’ civil rights in the United States than Frederick Douglass, an American social reformer, orator, writer and statesman. His list of accomplishments would be impressive enough even without taking into account the fact that he was born into slavery.
Douglass was born into slavery, and it’s believed his father was a white man, even perhaps his master Aaron Anthony. When Douglass was about 12, his slaveowner’s wife, Sophia Auld, began teaching him the alphabet in defiance of the South’s laws against teaching slaves how to read. When her husband Hugh found out, he was furious, reminding her that if the slave learned to read, he would become dissatisfied with his condition and desire freedom. Those words would prove prophetic.
Douglass is noted as saying that "knowledge is the pathway from slavery to freedom,” and he took that advice to heart, teaching himself how to read and write with his knowledge of the alphabet. On September 3, 1838, Douglass successfully escaped slavery, traveling by boat to Delaware, Philadelphia, and finally New York, all in the span of a day. Douglass found a “new world had opened upon me.”
Harriet Tubman is one of the most famous women in American history, and from an early age every American learns of her contributions to abolition and the Underground Railroad. The woman who became known as the Moses of her people personally led more than 13 expeditions to free slaves in the South, and she was so integral in helping escaped slaves achieve freedom that her name is practically synonymous with the Underground Railroad today.
If anything, the central role she played in the Underground Railroad has become so ingrained among subsequent generations that Tubman’s life has been shrouded in legend, and other important aspects have been overlooked.
