Beschreibung

Guam History explores the captivating story of Guam, a small island whose history reflects centuries of colonial ambition and strategic global importance. From the traditions of the Chamorro people to its role in the Spanish Empire, World War II, and beyond, the book examines how Guam's location shaped its destiny. Intriguing facts include the devastating impact of diseases introduced by Spanish colonizers on the Chamorro population and Guam's transformation into a crucial U.S. military base, impacting its economy and cultural identity.

The book traces Guam's journey from its pre-colonial heritage, highlighting Chamorro seafaring traditions, to Spanish colonization and the profound cultural shifts that followed. It then shifts to the 20th century, focusing on the Japanese occupation during World War II and the subsequent American recapture, which dramatically reshaped the island. The narrative concludes by examining Guam's current status as an unincorporated U.S. territory, addressing challenges related to sovereignty, economic development, and cultural preservation.

Drawing on diverse sources, Guam History offers a nuanced account of the island's past, making it valuable for anyone interested in Pacific history, colonialism, and globalization.

Fairy tales are more than mere bedtime stories; they are living, breathing repositories of ancient wisdom and magick. In The Night House, bestselling author and word-witch Danielle Dulsky peels back the layers of these timeless narratives to reveal their potent role as guides for navigating today's world. Historically kept and passed on by women, fairy tales are distinguishable from other types of folk tales by their supernatural elements, and because of this, they were often dismissed as trivial fantasies for women and children. Danielle illuminates how this marginalization kept these stories safe from the witch-hunter's noose and allowed women to safely store and transmit their sacred age-old wisdom for new generations to uncover and explore. Her fresh and relevant commentary will support your kinship with the Earth, ancestors, and your own living myth. The Night House shows how a single fairy tale is actually a treasure box of coded knowledge and magickal practice that has remained largely intact, preserved under the floorboards of the Yaga's hut for us to find.

This book is the result of 30+ interviews of genius-level science professionals in various fields. They have all been asked the same set of questions, and have answered, to the best of their ability and knowledge. What you’re about to read is the answers to these questions, not from all the individuals, but from the most interesting 4 or 5 who answered each question. These interviews are for two kinds of audiences: 1) curious amateurs, and 2) science, engineering, or other professionals who have a general knowledge of and curiosity about science, but who are not experts in the field being covered.
At the start of my journey in science, I already had a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, but that was from 1998, certainly not 2016 when I started. Reading scientific papers was difficult at first – I understood about 10% of what I was reading. As I interviewed more scientists, researchers, clinicians and others, I started to pick up the vocabulary and thinking process needed to read scientific papers. After a year of reading, my comprehension increased, and now stands at around 70%, typically. In the areas of Physics or other sciences in which I’m not conversant, I understand about 30%. In advanced math, since it’s a language unto itself, especially at high levels, I am back to the 10% level.
Apply yourself, and you’ll be surprised at what you can learn in a year’s time.

When Daniel Khalife escaped from Wandsworth in September 2023, the nation got a glimpse into the heart of the prison system, and what they saw there was chaos. This came as no surprise to Ian Acheson, who had spent years warning of the disasters to come.
Screwed is the inside story of the collapse of His Majesty's Prison Service, told by someone who had a front-row seat to it all. Acheson went from officer to Governor in less than a decade, and during that time he witnessed the uniformed organisation he was proud to serve crumble into lethal disarray. This uncompromisingly brutal account exposes the politics and operational decisions that have driven our prisons to a state where rats roam freely, prisoners are forced to use slop buckets, violence and intimidation are normalised and it is easier to get a bag of heroin than a bar of soap.

Concluding that the crisis is not unfixable, however, Acheson outlines a new corporate culture and mission that puts its faith in the officers who walk the landings every day: order restored, potential rescued, society safeguarded.
