Summary

Byzantine Script Power explores the profound impact of writing and record-keeping on the thousand-year Byzantine Empire. It argues that script was not merely a tool, but a central force in shaping governance, solidifying faith, and enabling the empire's complex administration. The book delves into how imperial laws and legal codices, like the Corpus Juris Civilis, became symbols of authority. It also examines the creation and spread of religious texts and the meticulous record-keeping that facilitated centralized control, illustrating the deep connection between script and imperial power.

The book takes an interdisciplinary approach, drawing from legal history, religious studies, and public administration to offer a fresh perspective. By examining legal documents, illuminated manuscripts, and inscriptions, the study reveals new insights into scribal practices and textual culture. The book begins with an overview of Byzantine scriptoria and literacy, then progresses through the role of law, the intersection of script and faith, and finally the administrative uses of script, revealing how these written forms strengthened the empire.

We broke our new series on learning Bulgarian down into different learning stages. Start with the "Lower Beginner" books followed by the "Beginner" and "Upper Beginner" books. Next, progress to the "Intermediate" series, then test and reinforce your knowledge with the "Conversations" series.
This audiobook is divided into units. While it provides different learning patterns and accommodates various needs, this audiobook focuses on helping you improve your ability to understand, speak, and memorise Bulgarian.
In Unit 1 you will hear Bulgarian decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said.
Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native Bulgarian speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language.
By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand Bulgarian. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in Bulgarian at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken Bulgarian, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences.
In Unit 5 you can test yourself on how much you have learned. If you are having difficulties, we suggest you revisit the listening, speaking, or memorisation section of Units 1, 2 3 or 4, according to what you need more help with.

“A first-class history, impeccably researched and skillfully written . . . by the foremost historian of the American D-Day experience.” —Naval History   Added to the invasion plan largely at the insistence of British General Bernard Montgomery, the attack at Utah Beach aimed to secure the Cotentin Peninsula and ultimately seize the port of Cherbourg. Although the assault on Utah Beach became one of the most successful American military operations of World War II, it was fraught with risk from the beginning: Not only was Utah the most isolated of the five D-Day beaches, but the airborne operation was of unprecedented size and scope. Despite the perils, American troops cascaded into that corner of Normandy from the sea and the sky, gaining a military triumph that contributed decisively to Allied success on D-Day.  With many never-before-published firsthand accounts from the men who were there; detailed maps providing minute-by-minute insight into the combat; photos; and comprehensive lists of all of Medal of Honor and Distinguished Service Cross recipients at Utah Beach, this book, a companion to the author’s Omaha Beach, is both an engaging narrative and a tribute to the men who stormed the beaches and dropped from the sky. “Even the most seasoned historian will find something new in these pages.” —Army magazine “[A] groundbreaking analysis of the other half of America’s D-Day.” —Dennis Showalter, author of Patton and Rommel

The remarkable story of George Downing—savvy soldier, politician, diplomat, spy, and one of the most scandalous figures of his era.Judged by contemporaries to be a "perfidious rogue," Sir George Downing rose to prominence during the English Civil War as Oliver Cromwell's chief of military intelligence. In the Interregnum he proved himself a double–dealer who bribed and blackmailed his way to diplomatic success across Europe (pioneering the practice of judicial kidnapping and starting two major wars in the process), before spectacularly betraying his friends to horrifically violent deaths by defecting to Charles II's court.Always at the center of events, Downing engaged with the most illustrious men and women of his times: Samuel Pepys was his clerk; John Milton prepared his letters and dispatches; William of Orange was godfather to his son; his next–door neighbor was Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia; and when Downing finally built his street, his surveyor was Sir Christopher Wren.Cromwell's Spy tells George Downing's story for the very first time, following him from the asceticism of Puritan New England, across English battlefields, through courts, chancelleries and parliaments, to the heart of wealth and power in Restoration London.

From Phyllis Schlafly, the woman whose celebrated classic A Choice, Not an Echo upended the 1964 Republican Convention, comes a persuasive new argument for a surprising conservative choice: Donald Trump.
For the first time since 1980, a significant number of Republicans are considering abandoning their party’s nominee. This is a grave mistake, Schlafly says, because a Donald Trump “radical redirection” could actually set America back on the path of Reagan’s conservative revolution.
In The Conservative Case for Trump, Schlafly and coauthors Ed Martin and Brett M. Decker set aside the circus of the campaign and zero in on eight defining points of the Trump agenda to convince Republican voters that Donald Trump—improbable as it may seem—is the true conservative they’ve been waiting for.
