Most people assume the constant mental commentary is who they are. A foundational skill is to notice that a stream of thoughts, judgments, and rehearsed dialogues is occurring—and that you can be aware of it. The shift from “I am the thinker” to “I am the one noticing thinking” creates instant psychological space.
 
 
 
With practice, simply labeling this stream as “mental narration” (without arguing with it) weakens its grip.
