  	Although the school of philosophy started by Socrates and championed by Plato and Aristotle continues to be the most famous, other schools of thought began to branch, including the Epicureans and Cynics. In the 3rd century B.C., Stoicism arose in response to and under the influence of these older schools, combining many of the best theories from each into a more cohesive whole. With a greater flexibility and more practical application to everyday life, Stoicism quickly became a very popular school of thought, a growth made exponential by its introduction to the Romans.  
  Today, very few have heard of him, but he became a major philosophical and religious figure through the publication of his thoughts, travels, and miracles by Philostratus the Elder (c. 170-247 A.D.), written about a century after Apollonius of Tyana’s death. Philostratus the Elder’s works were based on the works of other writers (Maximus of Aegae, Damis, and Moeragenes), and miracles attributed to Apollonius were often compared to those of Jesus, who lived around the same time. Apollonius’s cult was important throughout the whole of the Pagan era and even carried on into the Middle Ages. Why such an important philosopher has been so forgotten by modern historians is in itself an interesting issue, and it is just as crucial to understand what Apollonius preached and the information he provided about his contemporary world.

If everything that happens is the result of a cause, can we truly say we have control over our decisions? Is free will simply an illusion? These questions challenge our sense of autonomy and personal responsibility, and they invite us to explore the complex relationship between fate, coincidence, and choice. 
  Determinism suggests that all events, including human actions, are preordained by prior causes. From a deterministic standpoint, the universe is a vast, interconnected web of cause and effect, where each moment flows seamlessly from the one before it. This view raises profound questions about the nature of human agency. If every decision we make, every thought we have, and every action we take is determined by a series of preceding events—genetic, environmental, and even cosmic—where does the space for free will lie? Are we merely puppets of fate, our strings pulled by forces beyond our control? 
  However, this deterministic view is not universally accepted. Many philosophers argue that humans can exercise free will—that we have the capacity to make choices independent of the deterministic forces at play. This belief in free will asserts that while factors such as genetics, upbringing, and circumstances may influence our decisions, we retain the ability to act in ways that transcend these influences. The challenge, then, is reconciling the possibility of free will with the idea that many of our actions may be shaped or even constrained by forces outside our conscious control.

  Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, abolitionist, and poet who led the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society, and his ideology was disseminated through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures across the United States. 
   
  Emerson gradually moved away from the religious and social beliefs of his contemporaries, formulating and expressing the philosophy of transcendentalism in his 1836 essay "Nature". Following this work, he gave a speech entitled "The American Scholar" in 1837, which Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. considered to be America's "intellectual Declaration of Independence." 
   
  Emerson wrote most of his important essays as lectures first and then revised them for print. His first two collections of essays, Essays: First Series and Essays: Second Series, represent the core of his thinking. They include the well-known essays "Self-Reliance", "The Over-Soul", "Circles", "The Poet", and "Experience." Together with "Nature", these essays made the decade from the mid-1830s to the mid-1840s Emerson's most fertile period. Emerson wrote on a number of subjects, never espousing fixed philosophical tenets, but developing certain ideas such as individuality, freedom, the ability for mankind to realize almost anything, and the relationship between the soul and the surrounding world. Emerson's "nature" was more philosophical than naturalistic: "Philosophically considered, the universe is composed of Nature and the Soul." Emerson is one of several figures who "took a more pantheist or pandeist approach by rejecting views of God as separate from the world."
