Beschreibung

Domestic Violence Laws explores the effectiveness of legal systems in protecting victims of domestic abuse, set against the backdrop of complex family relationships and politics. The book examines protective orders, mandatory arrest policies, and court protocols, which are critical legal interventions, and emphasizes how shortcomings can undermine victim protection and perpetuate abuse cycles. It offers insights into the legal frameworks and their real-world application. The book argues that while legal mechanisms exist to combat domestic violence, systemic issues often hamper their effectiveness. For instance, mandatory arrest policies, intended to protect victims, can lead to unintended consequences like dual arrests. The analysis incorporates legal scholarship, case law, and statistical data, connecting the topic to sociology, psychology, and public policy. Beginning with the historical context of domestic violence, the book traces legal interventions like the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). It progresses by dissecting protective orders, scrutinizing mandatory arrest policies, and dedicating a significant portion to court protocols, all while maintaining a clear and accessible style suitable for a broad audience.

A bittersweet story that begins with the delightful discovery of a famous birth mother.
Before film star Karen Black became an icon, she gave up a newborn daughter to adoption. While Karen's career led her to Hollywood fame, her daughter Diane grew up near Chicago. For five decades they knew nothing about each other. Then Illinois opened their sealed adoption records, and Diane sent for her original birth certificate. She was amazed to discover that her birth mother was an iconic actress in the '70s and a cult horror star in the '80s and beyond. Karen starred in prominent films such as Easy Rider, The Great Gatsby, Airport 1975, Burnt Offerings and the TV movie Trilogy of Terror.
This heartfelt memoir takes the listener into Diane's adopted life without her birth mother, and follows Karen and Diane through their one year together as Karen bravely battles cancer. This remarkable story is a testament to the power of the mother-child bond, the importance of our roots, and the belief that love lasts forever.
Award-winning Christina Delaine's exceptional narration captures Karen's vivacious spirit and the story's emotional moments with authenticity.
"This book took me by surprise with emotional timbre, honest emotions, and depth of feeling. Through immersive writing, descriptive narration, and stark imagery, Finding Karen Black expertly weaves a mother-daughter story, unlike anything I've read before." --N. N. Light

Riveting ghost stories with history from all the major engagements of the war.Civil War Ghost Trails examines the major engagements of the Civil War and their connections to the paranormal world. The history of each battlefield is followed by the classic ghost stories that have been around since the guns fell silent. Mark Nesbitt also collected newer stories and attempted a paranormal investigation, including Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP), at many of the sites to see what could be found. In some cases, the results were astounding. Some of the spirits included in the book are the Headless Zouave at Bull Run, the Drummer Boy at Shiloh, and the Phantom Battalion at Gettysburg. Ghosts appear at the Bloody Lane at Antietam and Caroline Street in Fredericksburg, as well as sites at Chancellorsville, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Petersburg, and Appomattox Court House. A special section of the book explores the haunted Civil War prisons at Johnson’s Island in Ohio, Point Lookout in Maryland, and Andersonville in Georgia. Abraham Lincoln’s many White House apparitions are discussed in a section on wartime Washington, D.C.

Yellow Woman and a Beauty of the Spirit is a collection of twenty-two powerful and indispensable essays on Native American life, written by one of America's foremost literary voices.

Bold and impassioned, sharp and defiant, Leslie Marmon Silko's essays evoke the spirit and voice of Native Americans. Whether she is exploring the vital importance literature and language play in Native American heritage, illuminating the inseparability of the land and the Native American people, enlivening the ways and wisdom of the old-time people, or exploding in outrage over the government's long-standing, racist treatment of Native Americans, Silko does so with eloquence and power, born from her profound devotion to all that is Native American.

Yellow Woman and a Beauty of the Spirit is written with the fire of necessity. Silko's call to be heard is unmistakable—there are stories to remember, injustices to redress, ways of life to preserve. It is a work of major importance, filled with indispensable truths—a work by an author with an original voice and a unique access to both worlds.

“Society lies under the spell of ancient terrorism and coagulated errors. Science is either wilfully hypocritical or radically misinformed.”

John Addington Symonds struck many an heroic note in this courageous (albeit anonymously circulated) essay. He is a worthy Virgil guiding the reader through the Inferno of suffering which emerging medico-legal definitions of the sexually deviant were prepared to inflict on his century and on the one which followed. Symonds pleads for sane human values in a world of Urnings, Dionings, Urano-Dionings and Uraniasters - in short, the whole paraphernalia of Victorian taxonomies and undigested Darwinism which, superimposed on the “terrorism” of religion, labelled and to some extent created the specimen “homosexual.”

A discussion of the “manly love” poems of Walt Whitman leads the author to speculate on a better future for the criminalised mutual passions of men; yet he is obliged to defer the dream, for “the world cannot be invited to entertain it.” (Introduction by Martin Geeson)

When most people think of “ancient American civilizations,” the Aztec, Maya, or Inca cultures probably come to mind immediately, because the societies in Mesoamerica have left behind permanent structures for millions of visitors from around the world to see each year. At the same time, however, from about 1000-1500 CE, an equally complex culture formed along the banks of the Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio Rivers. From Red Wing, Minnesota to Greenhouse, Louisiana, and from Spiro, Oklahoma to Macon, Georgia, societies built impressive mound structures that served as ritual platforms, burial sites, and residences for the elites. These mounds also served as the focal points of urban areas of varying sizes that were connected to each other through trade and ideology, forming a culture that modern historians have since designated the “Mississippian culture.”
It has only been recently that modern archaeological, anthropological, and historical methods were utilized to create a somewhat accurate image of the Mississippian culture’s reach and importance in the wider contexts of American and world history. Today, historians have a much better understanding of many aspects of Mississippian culture, including its chronology, the religion of the people, urbanization, and how the people lived, and the fact that there were fully functioning complex societies that had sophisticated forms of government and long-distance trade networks. 	The mounds they made, which continue to serve as standing testaments to their extraordinary accomplishments, continue to be studied by experts who still have plenty of questions about the societies that produced them. But one thing’s for sure: with no evidence of a written language and a high probability that the groups spoke different languages (based on the earliest lingual patterns encountered from each region), what the Mississippian culture accomplished in the span of a few centuries is nothing short of phenomenal.
