We are living in an age which is singularly poor in fine voices, both male and female, and with regard to the tenors of the present time there is this additional misfortune, that, as a rule, their voices do not last, but are often worn out in a very few years; in many instances while their owners are still under training, and before they have had an opportunity of making their appearance in public. If we remember that there was a time when most beautiful and highly cultivated voices were so plentiful that even in comparatively small towns there were to be found Opera Companies consisting of excellent singers, we may well ask ourselves how this remarkable change for the worse has come about.
People have attempted to account for it in various ways. Up to the middle of the last century women were forbidden by Ecclesiastical Law to take part in church music. The voices of boys being available only for a very short time, means were taken to prevent their voices from breaking, and thus a class of male soprani and contralti was created, who made their first appearance in Rome in the beginning of the 17th century, and to these singers the education of the female voices was soon almost exclusively entrusted.
In the middle of the last century, however, when women were permitted to participate in church music, there was no longer any occasion to procure artificial female voices, and these singers gradually died out, though there were still some of them living and teaching in the beginning of the present century.

However there was me, Terry, different from the rest of my siblings, separated by design and confusing to my parents... This book takes you through a journey out of Tokoroa and into the world where I tried most things, tasted as much forbidden fruit as I could and did my best to experience all life had to offer at the time, but maybe all that glitters isn't always gold. My extended family's backstory paints a picture of love, heartache, rebellion and loss that many of us would not recover from. Did I conform, did I behave, did I make amends and forgive? Prepare to be challenged, pushed and pulled in all directions as this story seldom has a quiet moment. Desperate times call for desperate measures and sometimes in our lives we react in a way that we later regret, or at least try to. Harriet Tubman, freedom fighter and leader in the Underground Railroad, is one of the most significant figures in US history. Her courage and determination in bringing enslaved people to freedom have established her as an icon of the abolitionist movement. But behind the history of the heroine called "Moses" was a woman of deep faith.

In Walking the Way of Harriet Tubman, Therese Taylor-Stinson introduces Harriet, a woman born into slavery whose unwavering faith and practices in spirituality and contemplation carried her through insufferable abuse and hardship to become a leader for her people. Her profound internal liberation came from deep roots in mysticism, Christianity, nature spirituality, and African Indigenous beliefs that empowered her own escape from enslavement—giving her the strength and purpose to lead others on the road to freedom.

Harriet's lived spirituality illuminates a profound path forward for those of us longing for internal freedom, as well as justice and equity in our communities. As people of color, we must cultivate our full selves for our own liberation and the liberation of our communities. As the luminous significance of Harriet Tubman's spiritual life is revealed, so too is the path to our own spiritual truth, advocacy, and racial justice as we follow in her footsteps.

The Silver Invicta is a stream of impressions from a fishing life, in its varying moods, colored with plenty of whisky and eccentric company. Join Tom Harland on his light-hearted journeys with his fly rod; take part in his triumphs and disasters on rough, wild camping trips and share his encounters with the wildlife of Scotland’s rivers and lochs. The ‘Silver Invicta’ was the traditional fly which was taken by Tom’s first salmon and is also a nod to the spirit of Scotland’s embattled migratory fish. Tom has fished throughout his local Scottish Borders, England, the Western Isles and New Zealand (a country he lived and worked in for two years), but his real passion is for the brown trout of the hill lochs of Assynt in the North-west Highlands. Open this treasure trove of a book to share the pleasure the author finds through fishing respectfully in magical, wild, and seldom-visited places.

    Pablo Picasso - The Famous...

Picasso’s work is famous. His art is intricate yet bizarre. Many people have stood still over the wonders and simplicity of cubism and surrealism and have either been disgusted or amazed by it.
Picasso’s personal life was filled with struggles, but some of those were likely self-imposed. From records, we learn that he had multiple marriages, stepfamilies, and was extremely abusive in several of his relationships, dominating the women he slept with in kinky, sadistic ways. His children weren’t any better off, creating substance abuse and suicidal headlines.
Despite of the dysfunctionality in his personal and family life, his artwork reflected something new and fresh. His concepts of color, contrast, and composition have inspired many. And in a variety of paintings, an underlying rebel message against totalitarian regimes and the cruelty of warfare can be seen. Having lived through many of the horrors of the Spanish war, as well as other 20th-century conflicts, the painter showed both style and morale in his works and has left a legacy that can be studied by the masses.
