Beschreibung

In the mid-1930s, three giants of the international Modern movement, Bauhaus professors Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and László Moholy-Nagy, fled Nazi Germany and sought refuge in Hampstead in the most exciting new apartment block in Britain. The Lawn Road Flats, or Isokon building, was commissioned by the young visionary couple Jack and Molly Pritchard and designed by aspiring architect Wells Coates. Built in 1934 in response to the question 'How do we want to live now?' it was England's first modernist apartment building and was hugely influential in pioneering the concept of minimal living. During the mid-1930s and 1940s its flats, bar and dining club became an extraordinary creative nexus for international artists, writers and thinkers. Jack Pritchard employed Gropius, Breuer and Moholy-Nagy in his newly formed Isokon design company and the furniture, architecture and graphic art the three produced in pre-war England helped shape Modern Britain.
This book tells the story of the Isokon, from its beginnings to the present day, and fully examines the work, artistic networks and legacy of the Bauhaus artists during their time in Britain. The tales are not just of design and architecture but war, sex, death, espionage and infamous dinner parties. Isokon resident Agatha Christie features in the book, as does Charlotte Perriand who Jack Pritchard commissioned for a pavilion design in 1930.
The book is beautifully illustrated with largely unseen archive photography, and includes the work of photographer and Soviet spy Edith Tudor-Hart, as well as plans and sketches, menus, postcards and letters from the Pritchard family archive. In Spring 2018, the Isokon building and Breuer, Gropius and Moholy-Nagy were honoured with a Blue Plaque from English Heritage.

This book bundle offers a rich and immersive exploration of the histories, encounters, and enduring legacies that have shaped Australia and New Zealand. This three-part volume captures the essence of these lands through the lens of historical events, cultural clashes, and the resilience of Indigenous peoples.
The first section, The Story of Australia, traces the country's journey from its ancient Indigenous roots to the arrival of European settlers, the establishment of colonies, and its eventual rise as a modern nation — all while examining the profound and ongoing impact on Aboriginal communities.
The second section, Māori and Pākehā: A History of Encounters, delves into the complex relationship between the Māori, the Indigenous people of New Zealand, and the Pākehā (European settlers), exploring the cultural exchanges, conflicts, and efforts to coexist in a shared land.
The third section, The History of New Zealand, provides a broader perspective on the development of the nation, from its Polynesian discovery to British colonization, the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, and the ongoing struggle for Māori rights and cultural preservation.
Together, these three narratives weave a powerful and captivating story of the land, its people, and the historical forces that have shaped Australia, New Zealand, and the Māori. This book is essential for readers seeking a deeper understanding of the complex histories and cultural legacies that continue to define these two nations today.

A revelatory adventure that leads two friends into the belly of the beast with the ’90s most influential U.K. punk band that changed so many lives

It might seem odd — a punk band introducing poetry into someone’s life. But what if this lyrical influence was the reason you became a writer in the first place?

Days and Days weaves together two stories. One is a tale of friendship and self-discovery that occurs during a backpacking adventure through England, Scotland, and Ireland. The other celebrates the highly influential yet underestimated UK band Leatherface, a group that The Guardian called “the greatest British punk band of the modern era.”

Without so much as a single hostel booked, Chris MacDonald and his friend Jason cross the Atlantic. They sleep in train stations, endure a haunting on top of a volcano in Edinburgh, are driven out of Belfast by the IRA, and witness the mother of all storms. They also find themselves in the rehearsal space of their teenage punk idols, a building steeped in cultural significance for the Sunderland music scene.

Days and Days is about the silver thread that connects us even after drifting apart. It’s a story about forgiveness and reflection, how beauty can be found within callous cladding. Leatherface band members, colleagues, and friends generously share personal insights that guide the reader into the melancholy, darkness, and humor that surround Sunderland’s best-kept secret.
