Beschreibung

In "Three Sunsets and Other Poems," Lewis Carroll explores the delicate interplay between reality and imagination through a series of whimsical and thought-provoking verses. Often celebrated for his masterful use of language and inventive wordplay, Carroll's poems capture fleeting moments of beauty, nostalgia, and reflection. The collection stands out for its lyrical charm and vivid imagery, representative of the Victorian era's fascination with both nonsense and profound philosophical inquiry. Each poem serves as a canvas depicting the ephemeral nature of time, illustrated through the metaphor of sunsets, suggesting a harmonious blend of playful spirit and deeper existential contemplation. Lewis Carroll, known primarily for his celebrated works "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass," was heavily influenced by his background in mathematics and logic. His fascination with the absurd, coupled with his keen insights into human nature and society, propelled him into the realm of poetry. Carroll's adeptness at merging whimsical scenarios with insightful commentary is evident in this collection, which reflects his unique voice and his ability to engage readers in a conversation about life's complexities. For readers seeking an enchanting blend of imagination and philosophical introspection, "Three Sunsets and Other Poems" is a must-read. Carroll's ability to traverse the realms of light-hearted humor and profound insight invites readers to ponder their own perceptions of reality. This collection not only entertains but also provokes thoughtful reflection on the beauty and transience of existence, making it an essential addition to any literary repertoire.

The language of Poetry is an art that most of us attempt at some point in our lives. Although its commonplace exposure has been somewhat marginalised in today’s often fast-paced lives we all recognise good verse that can empathise with our thoughts or open us up to experience new things in new ways, to better understand and to enjoy the many strands of our lives.
But finding a starting point can be overwhelming, even off-putting, so in this series we offer up our Top 10 classic poets, who brim with talent and verse, on a range of subjects and themes that we can all enjoy.
In this volume we collect together poets who, by the difference in the colour of their skin, were treated with such disdain and racism that it is difficult to believe that poetry of such tenderness, beauty and authority could exist.

My love of poetry was always unrequited. As with all young boys, my English teachers forced me to memorize and recite unintelligible Shakespearean sonnets and turn bad blood into worse ink. For the next half-century, I never gave it a chance.
But at the age of 71, poetry came in search of me.
The theme of ‘senses’ made sense. As a physician and winemaker, I would try to turn exquisite impressions into exquisite expressions, solvents for the soul dipped in dyes of the heart.
There are 17 poems in this sense-ational collection, each with a different form, climbing higher on the sensory evolutionary ladder from the cranial nerves to the prefrontal cortex and beyond.
Writing them was like dropping a rose petal into an elevator shaft and waiting for the echo.
Read these short, jagged-edged lines as imaginary gardens of joy and pain and wonder, with a dash of dictionary.

“One of Singapore’s most visible poets, Pang grows with each book. In his poems we hear a voice unhurried, confident, and capable of carrying diverse humors, and read a rhetoric shaded to ironies, surprising us with glimpses of contemporary experience that affirm yet mock, celebrate and unsettle. His poetry adds a rich and complex presence to the critical mass of urban literature now fully emergent from Singapore. His poems, at once recognizably national and international in reach, offer a fresh edgy energy to this tradition.”

“The sick should be good. / It is a kind of undoing,” Ashley-Elizabeth Best writes in her second collection. Bad Weather Mammals navigates the devastations and joys of living in a disabled and traumatized body. By taking a backward glance, she traces how growing up under the maladaptive bureaucracy of social services with a single disabled mother and five younger siblings led her to a precarious future in which she is also disabled and living on social assistance. In poems that explore a variety of formal constraints, such as the suite “ODSP 1, 2, & 3,” which infuses government forms with lyric poetry, she suggests all the ways the medical and bureaucratic systems can dehumanize and traumatize our most vulnerable citizens. By digging deep into her own experiences, Best has archived the ways we fail each other in our most desperate times — while at the same time outlining how we can show up to revel in disabled joy and community. Bad Weather Mammals disassembles dominant narratives about how disabled individuals should be and reconceptualizes the embodied experiences that recenter us in our own narrative.

Amber is trapped – by her family's rules and expectations, and by her own fears. But on the running track she feels free. As her body speeds up, the world slows down. And the tangled, mixed-up words in her head start to make sense...
It's time to start a revolution: for her mother, for her sister, for herself. Run, Amber. Run.
Manjeet Mann's multi-award-winning verse novel, Run, Rebel, about a young woman beginning to take control of her life, was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal 2021 and won the CILIP Carnegie Shadowers Choice Award, a UKLA Book Award, a Diverse Book Award and the Sheffield Children's Book Award.
This fast-paced, mesmerising stage version, adapted by the author, was first produced in 2023 by Pilot Theatre, with Mercury Theatre, Colchester, Belgrade Theatre Coventry, Derby Theatre and York Theatre Royal.
