Synopsis

Anna Karenina is a novel by the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, published in serial instalments from 1873 to 1877 in the periodical The Russian Messenger. Tolstoy clashed with Editor Mikhail Katkov over political issues that arose in the final instalment (Tolstoy's unpopular views of volunteers going to Serbia); therefore, the novel's first complete appearance was in book form. Widely regarded as a pinnacle in realist fiction, Tolstoy considered Anna Karenina his first true novel, when he came to consider War and Peace to be more than a novel.

Fyodor Dostoevsky declared it to be "flawless as a work of art". His opinion was shared by Vladimir Nabokov, who especially admired "the flawless magic of Tolstoy's style", and by William Faulkner, who described the novel as "the best ever written”. The novel is currently enjoying popularity, as demonstrated by a recent poll of 125 contemporary authors by J. Peder Zane, published in 2007 in "The Top Ten" in Time, which declared that Anna Karenina is the "greatest novel ever written".

Anna Karenina is the tragedy of married aristocrat and socialite Anna Karenina and her affair with the affluent Count Vronsky. The novel is divided into eight parts. Tolstoy's style in Anna Karenina is considered by many critics to be transitional, forming a bridge between the realist and modernist novel. The novel is narrated from a third-person-omniscient perspective, shifting the narrator's attention to several major characters, though most frequently focusing on the opposing lifestyles and attitudes of its central protagonists of Anna and Levin.

Downton Abbey - PG Wodehouse style! Here we have a glorious ensemble of Wodehousian characters knocking elbows to foreheads in the elegant and grand Blandings Castle. Meet Freddy Threepwood, the vagrant son of doddering old Lord Emsworth of Blandings Castle. Freddy has recently become engaged to Aline Peters, the American heiress of an irascible father. The snag is that Freddy seems to have at one point become enamored of a struggling actress, Joan Valentine, and written some impetuous and imprudent letters to her. Joan has now moved on and is currently employed as a writer for a magazine’s society column. Freddy has employed a certain R. Jones, a man of portly and dubious character, to attempt to buy back Freddy’s letters, and keep his engagement safe. We also meet Ache Marson, an athlete who writes the Gridley Quayle series of pulp mystery stories, and also lives in the flat just below the actress/writer Joan Valentine. Got that strait? Sound confusing? Wait till we get going.Narrated by B.J. Harrison of The Classic Tales Podcast who brings each whimsical Wodehouse character to life with his usual, wonderful gusto.

The vampire novel that defined a genre by tapping into our deepest fears and darkest fantasies A junior solicitor travels to Transylvania to meet with an important client, the mysterious Count Dracula. Ignoring the dire warnings of local townsfolk, he allows himself to be seduced by the count’s courtly manners and erudite charm. Too late, the solicitor realizes that he is a prisoner of Castle Dracula, his guards a trio of voluptuous young women with sharp white teeth and a taste for blood. Soon thereafter, the solicitor’s fiancée, Mina, visits a friend on the English coast. The town is full of speculation over a Russian ship run aground nearby, its crew missing, the dead body of its captain, crucifix in hand, lashed to the wheel. A giant dog was seen leaping from the deck before disappearing into the countryside. The ship’s cargo: fifty boxes of Transylvanian dirt. As the beautiful Mina will soon learn, Count Dracula has arrived.  At once a Gothic reflection of the Victorian era and a timeless tale of sinister lust, Bram Stoker’s Dracula has inspired countless adaptations—none with the same power to quicken the pulse as the original. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

Being acknowledged for what you do is always very welcome. When it comes to Oscar’s, Emmy’s, Pulitzer’s and Nobel’s it’s also international news and for many, the pinnacle of their career.

The Nobel Prize is much lauded and very difficult to secure. In this volume we list ten of its winners over the decades who were famed for their literature. The prize is given with an emphasis on its contribution to literature and its influence in the world and for the individual, more usually, for the body of work created.

So, whilst none of the stories in this volume were winners in their own right, their authors most certainly were. They perfectly illustrate both the nature and mastery of the writing and the power and the purpose set within its storied prose.
