Beschreibung

"From the quiet of the country to the glare of the studio lights—the Hosmer sisters are ready for their close-up!"

Ruth and Alice Hosmer are not your typical turn-of-the-century heroines. When their father, a talented but struggling actor, loses his voice, the family's future looks bleak—until a chance encounter leads them to the "moving pictures." In The Moving Picture Girls, the sisters brave social stigma and technical mishaps to become stars of the silent screen. This isn't just a story of fame; it's an adventure filled with daring stunts, rivalries between film companies, and the mechanical mysteries of the first cameras. Join Ruth and Alice as they navigate the transition from the theatrical stage to the flickering magic of the cinema.

A Window into Cinematic History: Written when the film industry was still in its infancy, this book provides a fascinating historical account of how "flickers" were actually made. From the "cranking" of the camera to the dangers of nitrate film and the lack of artificial lighting, it captures the raw, experimental energy of early Hollywood-style production before it moved to California.

Sisters of Action: While Ruth is the responsible, thoughtful eldest, Alice is the spirited and daring younger sister. Their bond is the heart of the series as they face the "villains" of the film world—dishonest producers and jealous rivals—while proving that girls can be just as resourceful and brave as any leading man.

The "New Woman" of the 1910s: The Hosmer sisters represent a shift in juvenile fiction toward more independent female leads. They travel, earn their own living, and solve problems using their wits and newfound professional skills, making them precursors to later icons like Nancy Drew.

"The Portrait of Mr. W. H." is a story written by Oscar Wilde, first published in Blackwood's Magazine in 1889. It was later added to the collection Lord Arthur Savile's Crime and Other Stories, though it does not appear in early editions. An enlarged edition planned by Wilde, almost twice as long as the Blackwood's version, with cover illustration by Charles Ricketts, did not proceed and only came to light after Wilde's death. This was published in limited edition by Mitchell Kennerley in New York in 1921, and in a first regular English edition by Methuen in 1958, edited by Vyvyan Holland.
Wilde's story is narrated by a friend of a man called Erskine, who is preoccupied by the Hughes theory. Erskine had learned the idea from one Cyril Graham, who had tried to persuade Erskine of it based on the text of the sonnets, but Erskine was frustrated by the lack of external historical evidence for Willie Hughes's existence. Graham tried to find such evidence but failed; instead, he fakes a portrait of Hughes in which Hughes is depicted with his hand on a book on which can be seen the dedication from the sonnets. Erskine is convinced by this evidence, but then discovers the portrait to be a fake, a discovery that leads him to yet again doubt the existence of Willie Hughes. Graham still believes in the theory, and to prove it, shoots himself.

An exuberant man as well as a prolific and gifted writer, G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936) was a man with very strong opinions - and extremely capable of defending them. In this hilarious, satirical romp, Chesterton demonstrates his intense distrust of power and "progressives," railing against Prohibition, vegetarianism, theosophy, and other "dreary and oppressive" forces of modernity. In a spirited response to the government's attempt to curtail alcohol sales, Humphrey Pump (called Hump) a pub owner in the fishing village of Pebblewick takes to the road in a donkey cart. Accompanied by Captain Patrick Dalroy, a crimson-haired giant with a tendency to burst into song, Hump provisions the cart with a cask of good rum, a giant round of cheese, and the signpost from his pub, The Flying Inn. Together, the two men extend good cheer to an increasingly restless populace as they attempt to evade Prohibition. In a journey that becomes a rollicking madcap adventure, the two travel round England, encountering revolution, romance, and a cast of memorable characters. Sure to receive an enthusiastic welcome from Chesterton fans, this new edition of an old classic will also appeal to anyone who enjoys a humorous, well-crafted tale.

The extraordinarily evocative stories depict the generation born in a small-town America during the Depression and growing up in a world where the old sexual morality was turned around and material comforts were easily had. Yet, as these stories reflect so accurately, life was still unsettling, and Updike chronicles telling moments both joyful and painful. The texts are taken from his recent omnibus, The Early Stories, 1953-1975.
In describing how he wrote these stories in a small, rented, smoke-filled office in Ipswitch, Massachusetts, he says, ""I felt that I was packaging something as delicately pervasive as smoke, one box after another, in that room, where my only duty was to describe reality as it had come to me -- to give the mundane its beautiful due.""
