Beschreibung

"Bright lights, big buildings, and a city full of surprises—the Bobbsey twins are taking on the Metropolis!"

The Bobbseys are trading the quiet streets of Lakeport for the roaring energy of the "Great City." In The Bobbsey Twins in a Great City, Nan, Bert, Flossie, and Freddie travel to New York, where every street corner holds a new wonder. From the dizzying heights of early skyscrapers to the crowded bustle of the department stores, the twins experience the cutting edge of 1917 urban life. But the city is as mysterious as it is large; when one of the twins goes missing in the crowd, it takes quick thinking and a bit of "Bobbsey luck" to reunite the family and solve an unexpected urban puzzle.

A Tale of Two Worlds: This volume highlights the contrast between the twins' familiar small-town values and the fast-paced, sophisticated environment of the city. It captures the awe of childhood discovery as the twins navigate subways, grand hotels, and the vibrant culture of the early 20th-century metropolis.

Urban Exploration and Mystery: The "Great City" serves as a giant playground for the twins' detective skills. Whether they are decoding the secrets of a busy harbor or finding their way through a maze-like park, Nan and Bert prove that their teamwork and bravery are effective even in the biggest city in the world.

Montague Rhodes James is cited as perhaps the greatest English writer of ghost stories, an opinion few would disagree with.
James was born on 1st August 1862 at Goodnestone Parsonage in Kent, where his father was Curate but at age 3 the family went to live at Livermere, near Bury St Edmunds in East Anglia.
From early childhood he had a passion for mediaeval books and antiques. He was educated initially as a boarder at Temple Grove School in East Sheen, west London, before gaining a scholarship to Eton and thence Cambridge where he gained a double first, becoming a distinguished linguist and mediaevalist.
Before the Great War vacations were usually spent touring Europe absorbing cultures and references for his later writing.
A man of enormous knowledge it was said he timed his breakfast egg whilst he completed the Times crossword.
Many of his elegant yet terrifying tales were created by discarding the prevailing gothic cliches and placing his characters and narrative in a realistic setting. Thereby the stories gained atmosphere and menace on a grand scale and he was famed as the originator of the antiquarian ghost story.
Although story-telling and writing these 30 or so tales was a hobby, when published their effect transformed the genre and still chill the bones in our more modern times.
James was also a medievalist scholar and translator whose work remains highly respected. He was also Provost of Eton College between 1918 and 1936.
M R James died on 12th June 1936 at Eton in Buckinghamshire. He was 73.

Anne of Avonlea is a 1909 novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery (published as L. M. Montgomery).
Anne is about to start her first term teaching at the Avonlea school, although she will still continue her studies at home with Gilbert, who is teaching at the nearby White Sands School. The book soon introduces Anne's new and problematic neighbour, Mr. Harrison, and his foul-mouthed parrot, as well as the twins, Davy and Dora. They are the children of Marilla's third cousin and she takes them in when their mother dies while their uncle is out of the country. Dora is a nice, well-behaved girl, somewhat boring in her perfect behaviour. Davy is Dora's exact opposite, much more of a handful and constantly getting into many scrapes. They are initially meant to stay only a short time, but the twins' uncle postpones his return to collect the twins and then eventually dies. Both Anne and Marilla are relieved (Marilla inwardly, of course) to know the twins will remain with them.

Jim Hawkins, the narrator of "Treasure Island", is a young man, yet most of the audiobooks available are performed by stately, mature men! This audiobook of the classic novel brings its characters - impulsive narrator Jim, two-faced John Silver, and each filthy pirate - to life in an energetic presentation full of charm and fun. Set sail with the Hispaniola with your course set for adventure!
Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" was the first to sail many seas: Long John Silver was the first one-legged buccaneer stumping about on a wooden leg, Captain Flint was the first pirate's parrot, and the map of Skeleton Island was the first to be marked with an X for "Dig Here" - but its swashbuckling adventure remains as fresh and exciting today as it did when it was first published; that's one of the rewards of being first.
