Kendrick Lamar's given name is Kendrick Lamar Duckworth and he was named after singer-songwriter Eddie Kendricks of the Temptations. His parents, who are African Americans from the South Side of Chicago, moved to Compton, California due to his father's affiliation with the Gangster Disciples.
As a child, Lamar was described by his mother as a loner and he lived in Section 8 housing and experienced homelessness while relying on welfare and food stamps. He was raised secular but also was taught the Bible by his grandmother and felt spiritually unsatisfied with the sermons.
In school, Lamar was a quiet and observant student with a stutter who excelled academically, and his first grade teacher encouraged him to write after she heard him correctly use the word "audacity".
