Synopsis

According to the Anxiety & Depression Association of America (ADAA), one of the most common mental disorders in the United States is anxiety disorder. This illness affects over 40 million American adults (18 years and older) each year, which is a big 18.1% of the US population.

Although anxiety disorders can be treated, over a third, or 36.9%, of the population only gets the allotted treatment, while the remaining 63.1% remain suffering.

Anxiety disorders are very common and have become associated with depression. These two illnesses may occur together, or one disorder leads to the other one and vice versa. Statistics say that almost half of the patients diagnosed with depression were also diagnosed with anxiety disorder.

Are you one of these people suffering from anxiety? What if we tell you that your anxiety may be caused by a nerve that is related to your stomach and your brain? Have you heard of the vagus nerve?

The vagus nerve is the “hunger nerve” that links your brain and gut. This nerve is responsible for sending signals from the gut to the brain back and forth.  Studies have revealed that if this nerve is not functioning well by being less sensitive or “asleep,” it may lead to other health problems such as obesity, gastrointestinal diseases, seizures, fainting, bradycardia, chronic inflammation, mood disorders, and anxiety.

How the vagus nerve becomes dysfunctional and what causes it to not work as it should, will be explained in the succeeding parts of the guide.

Since the vagus nerve is a nerve that does its work in the gut, we have thought that to bring it back to its former glory, then a healthy diet may be one of the ways to stimulate it (hint: obesity-inducing food items weaken the nerve).

In this guide, you will discover...

What the vagus nerve is

What its function in the body is

Vagus nerve and your health

How it becomes weak

How to stimulate it

What exercises can stimulate the nerve

What food items can activate it back

Toxicology is the scientific study of the adverse effects of chemical substances on living organisms. It encompasses a broad range of disciplines, including biology, chemistry, pharmacology, and environmental science, and is essential for understanding the impact of toxins on human health and the environment. The origins of toxicology can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where herbal remedies and poisons were used in medicine and warfare. Over the centuries, this field has evolved significantly, particularly with advancements in analytical techniques and a greater understanding of biological systems.

The fundamental principle of toxicology is that the effect of a substance depends not only on its inherent toxicity but also on the dose, duration of exposure, and the route by which it enters the body. This is often summarized by the phrase "the dose makes the poison," attributed to the Swiss physician Paracelsus in the 16th century. Paracelsus emphasized that even substances considered beneficial can be harmful in excessive amounts, highlighting the importance of understanding dosage in toxicological assessments.

The vagus nerve is the most important nerve you probably didn’t know you had.
The vagus nerve is a long meandering bundle of motor and sensory fibers that links the brain stem to the heart, lungs, and gut. It also branches out to touch and interact with the liver, spleen, gallbladder, ureter, female fertility organs, neck, ears, tongue, and kidneys.
Dr Justin Hoffman, a Santa Rosa, California, licensed naturopathic medical physician, says:
“Without the vagus nerve, key functions that keep us alive would not be maintained.”
Nationally recognized sports nutritionist, strength, and conditioning coach Brandon Mentore elaborates:
“The vagus nerve is extremely critical to your overall health and is intimately tied in with multiple organs and systems of the body.”
Vagus nerve dysfunction can result in a whole host of problems including obesity, bradycardia (abnormally slow heartbeat), difficulty swallowing, gastrointestinal diseases, fainting, mood disorders, B12 deficiency, chronic inflammation, impaired cough, and seizures.
Meanwhile, the vagus nerve stimulation has been shown to improve conditions such as:
    - Anxiety disorder
    - Heart disease
    - Tinnitus
    - Obesity
    - Alcohol addiction
    - Migraines
    - Alzheimer’s
    - Leaky gut
    - Bad blood circulation
    - Mood disorder
    - CancerWhether you are feeling anxiety or depression, you can use tools to engage your social nervous system to re-establish higher order nervous system functions.
