Synopsis

In "The Lakewood Boys on the Lazy S," L. P. Wyman intricately weaves a coming-of-age narrative set against the backdrop of the American West. Through vivid descriptions and engaging dialogue, Wyman introduces us to a group of boys from Lakewood who embark on a summer journey to the Lazy S ranch, igniting themes of friendship, adventure, and self-discovery. The literary style melds a blend of realism and youthful exuberance, while the context of post-war America provides a nostalgic lens that reflects the challenges and liberated spirit of mid-20th century youth cultures. L. P. Wyman, an author with a deep appreciation for both nature and the American ethos, likely drew from personal experiences in his own youth, fostering connections through outdoor adventures. His storytelling is informed by a lifetime of engagement with regional landscapes and a keen awareness of the societal changes occurring during his time, which he adeptly captures in the boys' interactions and challenges faced on their journey. This book is highly recommended for readers seeking an authentic portrayal of boyhood camaraderie and the exploration of identity. Wyman's evocative prose invites readers to reflect on their own formative experiences, making "The Lakewood Boys on the Lazy S" a timeless tale that resonates across generations.

On Sundays, everyone gathers at Granny’s for Soul Food. But today, I don’t go to the backyard or the great room. I follow Granny instead. “You’re a big boy now,” Granny says. “Time for you to learn.” At Granny’s, Sunday isn’t Sunday without a big family gathering over a lovingly prepared meal. Old enough now, our narrator is finally invited to help cook the dishes for the first time: he joins Granny in grating the cheese, cleaning the greens, and priming the meat for Roscoe Ray’s grill. But just when Granny says they’re finished, her grandson makes his own contribution, sweetening this Sunday gathering—and the many more to come. Evocative and vivid, this mouthwatering story is a warm celebration of tradition and coming together at a table filled with love and delicious food.

Metamorphosis by Mike Curry - Only when the last man died would the dim wastes of Asmarad be less lonely.
His name was Hrlec Brey. He was a big man, and he moved slowly as if he had all the time in the world.
And he had. He had all the time—years and years behind him, years and years ahead. And the world was his, its length and breadth, its skies and seas, the solitude of night, the loneliness of day.
He was eating dinner when the knowledge smashed across his mind: Tonight I am going to die.
He put down his leg of ayala and stared blankly at the plank wall across the room. That he was going to die did not disturb him. That he knew about it did. It was not whimsy that had crossed his mind. He was not given to idle speculation. It was as if a sense of precognition had suddenly developed in his intellect. It was a strange, irrevocable certainty.
His gaze fell on the half-eaten leg of ayala, and he shrugged. A crime to let it go to waste, impending death or not. He picked it up, moved his jaw slowly around the bone. So I'm going to die. Tomorrow I'll be free. Then his eyes hardened and his teeth tore savagely at the last bite of meat. I haven't evolved.
Moving slowly because the pains had been with him all day—he called them "pains" because there seemed no better word—he washed off the table and went out to the front porch of his small farmhouse on Ophiuchus VI to sit in the twilight and smoke his pipe. He was a man of fifty Earth years, whom age had weathered and work had bent, and the strongest thing about him was his will. He had willed to remain sane in his solitary world after the tragedy so many years before, and he had made it. Just made it. He did not even talk to himself.
