Beschreibung

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: The life of L. Frank Baum, the father of Oz, a fall from success to disaster

Originally published in 1911, "The Sea Fairies" is a children's fantasy novel written by American author L. Frank Baum. Baum is best known for his children's books, particularly “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” and its sequels.
As an underwater fantasy, Baum's "The Sea Fairies" can be classed with earlier books with similar themes, like Charles Kingsley's "The Water-Babies", and successors too, like E. Nesbit's "Wet Magic".

"The Sea Fairies" chronicles the adventures of Mayre "Trot" Griffiths, a small girl living on the coast of California, and her close friend and companion Cap'n Bill, formerly her father's employer and now a retired seaman with a wooden leg. As they walk along the beach one day, Trot wishes that she could see a mermaid. Nearby mermaids overhear her, and grant her wish, appearing to her and the Cap'n the next day. The mermaids explain that they are "sea fairies," and offer the girl a chance to experience their world. Trot is eager to go; Bill is not, but is too loyal to let Trot go by herself. Magically transformed, the two embark on an underwater adventure.

"The Sea Fairies" was followed by a successful sequel published the following year, "Sky Island." Both books were intended as parts of a projected long-running fantasy series to replace the Oz books.

This is small copy off introduction of the book: Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was an Italian astronomer, physicist, and engineer, sometimes described as a polymath. From a young age, Galileo showed a great aptitude for mathematics and science. He went on to study at the University of Pisa, where he made his first important scientific discovery: the laws of motion of a pendulum.
After leaving Pisa, Galileo taught mathematics at the University of Padua for nearly twenty years. During this time, he conducted a wide range of scientific experiments, including studies of inclined planes, falling bodies, and the motion of projectiles. He also invented the telescope, which he used to make groundbreaking observations of the heavens.
In 1610, Galileo published a book called The Starry Messenger, in which he described his telescopic observations of the Moon, Jupiter, and Venus. His discoveries included the four largest moons of Jupiter, which are now known as the Galilean moons. Galileo's work helped to overthrow the prevailing geocentric model of the universe, which placed the Earth at the center, and to establish the heliocentric model, which places the Sun at the center.
Galileo's support for the heliocentric model brought him into conflict with the Catholic Church, which at the time held great power and influence. In 1633, Galileo was put on trial by the Inquisition and forced to recant his views. However, he continued to work on his scientific theories in secret, and in 1638 he published his most important work, Two New Sciences.

Pirate Hunter is the story about Denmark’s Marine Commandos’ battle against the pirates off the Horn of Africa as told by one of the men who was closest to the action for the five years the campaign lasted. Henrik Monggaard Christensen is a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Danish Navy and a specialist Tactical Co-ordinator who was tasked with the planning and execution of the Danish mission against the Somali pirates in the western Arabian Sea.

In this book he reveals his version of the Danish counter-piracy efforts that he experienced from the front-seat of a Lynx helicopter. He tells us about the selection and training of the personnel who crew Danish ships and helicopters. About the breathtaking missions with the Frogmen
Commandos, Denmark’s Special Boat Squadron (SBS) equivalent, and about the arrest and imprisonment of the pirates. About how these invisible elite forces operating in the Gulf of Aden often felt that the Danish politicians and media did more to ensure their votes and readers than to save the Danish hostages from the pirates. About how Henrik Monggaard Christensen finally lost the grip on his own life during his attempt to rescue others.

For the first time we come close to the drama of the hostages from the Danish family onboard the yacht ‘Ing’ – and of the release of the Danish sailors Soeren and Eddy that day in April 2013 when the rescue actions were so close to going horrifically wrong.

What do George Whitefield, Elisabeth Elliot, and J. Gresham Machen have in common? They were all Evangelical Heroes. In the Evangelical Heroes series, Joel Beeke and Douglas Bond present thirty biographical sketches of faithful evangelical leaders from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. From George Whitfield to Charles Spurgeon to R.C. Sproul, these men and women held firm to the authority of Scripture and the reality of Christ's death and resurrection in the face of rising liberalism in the Church. These inspiring volumes introduce us to faithful Christians from the past and encourage us to stand firm today!
