Beschreibung

This book will carry the reader back to first principles, and point plainly and clearly to the land marks of 1776, as fixed by the signers of the declaration of our independence, and to rouse the patriot to a just sense of our blood-bought privileges and the necessity of preserving them pure and undefiled, has been the constant aim of the author. It presents biographies of fifty-eight individuals, all engaged in the accomplishment of a single object, the independence of the United State. The author has labored to be concise without being obscure, to inform the understanding without burdening the memory. He has introduced many apothegms, intending to improve the mind and mend the heart. The causes that led to the revolution, it's interesting progress, its happy termination and the formation of our federal government, are all amply delineated.

The Olympic Village—a gathering place for hot young athletes bursting with aggression and testosterone.
Was it an act of sabotage? The rival diving team got me on my knees the night before our competition. They fed me their seed, sending my mind into a tailspin.
Now, I’m on international television, fully hard in my little speedo. I can’t focus on diving—my dreams are falling apart. All I can think about is how good it felt to kneel for other men. It felt so good to accept their authority…

An open mind is not simply the ability to consider new ideas; it is a deep commitment to understanding, acceptance, and growth. In a world filled with diverse perspectives, an open mind acts as a bridge between different experiences, beliefs, and cultures. Embracing this quality begins with self-awareness, as recognizing one’s own biases and limitations is the first step toward true intellectual humility. When we acknowledge that our perspective is just one among many, we create space for learning and connection.
The process of understanding an open mind involves examining the roots of our thoughts and behaviors. Many of our judgments and preconceived notions originate from early experiences, societal norms, and ingrained habits. These factors shape how we view others and the world around us. By questioning these influences, we allow ourselves to break free from automatic responses and engage in thoughtful reflection. This reflective process is essential for transforming criticism into genuine curiosity and compassion.
Developing an open mind requires both intentional practice and courage. It means being willing to step outside our comfort zones and explore ideas that challenge our existing beliefs. This journey often involves confronting uncomfortable truths about ourselves and recognizing the limitations of our knowledge. However, the rewards are significant: increased empathy, improved relationships, and the ability to navigate complex social landscapes with grace. An open mind is not passive; it is an active, ongoing process of growth that requires us to listen deeply and respond with sensitivity.

Immigration is now a polarizing issue across most advanced democracies. But too much that is written about immigration fails to appreciate the complex responses to the phenomenon. In Borders and Belonging, Hiroshi Motomura offers a complex and fair-minded account of immigration, its root causes, and the varying responses to it. Taking stock of the issue's complexity, while giving credence to the opinions of immigration critics, he tackles a series of important questions that, when answered, will move us closer to a more realistic and sustainable immigration policy. Motomura begins by affirming a basic concept―national borders―and asks when they might be ethical borders, fostering fairness but also responding realistically to migration patterns and to the political forces that migration generates. In a nation with ethical borders, who should be let in or kept out? How should people forced to migrate be treated? Should newcomers be admitted temporarily or permanently? What is the best role for enforcement in immigration policy? To what extent does the arrival of newcomers hurt long-time residents? What are the "root causes" of immigration and how can we address them?Realistic about the desire of most citizens for national borders, this book is an indispensable guide for moving toward ethical borders and better immigration policy.
