The titular short story from the British Library Tales of the Weird collection From the Depths. A Swedish freighter is on a special mission to locate and survey a number of wrecks after the First World War. The first on their list was torpedoed exactly one year to the day and this proves to be no coincidence when the commander is suddenly tormented by an impossible Morse Code transmission from beyond the grave.

A disgruntled bear fiancé. A wanted familiar. A hairless cat named Lonnie. For Hazel Kinsey, it's just another day in Paradise Falls.

When Hazel's familiar Tizzy the Squirrel fell in love with another familiar, they had no idea her furry pal would gain witch magic.

Apparently, that's a big no-no for the High Familiar Clowder, the council who rules all familiars. When the Clowder shows up in Paradise Falls to decommission Tizzy and send her to the in-between, Haze defies the stick-in-the-butt jerkfaces by refusing to trade in Tiz for a new familiar.

But the Clowder means business. They strip Hazel of her magic, leaving her no better than a human. Worst of all, she's lost the mating scent she shared with her bear-beau, the hunky-handsome Ford Baylor. Without it or her witch powers, she can never be a real mate for him.

With only seventy-two hours to find a solution to her familiar and fiancé problems, Hazel and pals must find a way to stop the Clowder, get Hazel witchified again, save Tizzy and her true love, and oh yeah, battle sinister forces intent on glomming as much power as possible.

Yep. Just another day in Paradise Falls.

Ligeia; Morella; The Oval Portrait are a short stories in the Gothic horror genre by 19th-century American author and critic Edgar Allan Poe. Poe's short story 'Ligeia' offers the account of an opium-addled narrator who believes that he has seen the resurrection of his beloved first wife, Ligeia, after the death of his second wife, Rowena. "Morella" by Edgar Allan Poe is about a woman who seemingly dies and gives birth to a daughter who looks just like her. Her husband loves the daughter, but she dies when he names her the same as her mother, implying that mother and daughter were the same person. Edgar Allan Poe's Gothic horror story "The Oval Portrait" is among his shortest narratives. As it recounts the story of the death of a painter's young wife,"The Oval Portrait" is actually the 1845 revision of a longer story, "Life in Death," which Poe wrote in 1842, shortly after his beloved young wife, Virginia, first fell ill with the tuberculosis that would kill her five years later. Poe was terrified at the prospect of losing Virginia, and the death of beautiful young women was a frequent topic in his work at this time. In his 1846 essay "The Philosophy of Composition," he even called this the most poetic of all subjects.

Humanity has a hidden name, a “secret cord” known and feared in our unconscious minds for millennia. Uttered for the first time in human history, it has the power to control our very essence, altering us at the cellular level and changing us into mindless reapers intent on sharing the irresistible name; transforming all who hear and calling them to join the danse.
In the first year since the start of the zombie apocalypse, Andrew Moore and his young daughter have struggled to survive. As monsters patrol the streets in search of unwitting recruits for their army of shambling sirens, the Moores are making their way toward the Atlantic coast in hope of refuge on one of the government’s offshore sanctuaries. Meanwhile, Mark Bell has been stranded alone in the relative safety of a defensible state park. He has learned to survive and thrive despite the constant threat from the menacing masses of wandering undead.
As winter looms, the two men meet, and they decide to band together in a compromise plan to sail into Lake Erie; but can they survive long enough to reach their goal, or will the peculiar stranger they meet along the way put their chances of survival at risk?

The story is told from the first person perspective of an unnamed narrator and details his experiences with a scientist named Crawford Tillinghast.

Tillinghast creates an electronic device that emits a resonance wave, which stimulates an affected person's pineal gland, thereby allowing them to perceive planes of existence outside the scope of accepted reality.
