Synopsis

Kipps is a humorous and insightful novel that explores social class, ambition, and personal identity in early 20th-century England. The story follows Arthur Kipps, a kind-hearted and somewhat naïve young man who works as a draper's assistant and dreams of a better life beyond his modest circumstances.

When Kipps unexpectedly inherits a fortune, his world is turned upside down. Suddenly thrust into high society, he struggles to adapt to new expectations, manners, and relationships that feel foreign and restrictive. As Kipps navigates romance, social pressure, and the tension between authenticity and ambition, he must decide whether wealth truly offers happiness or merely complicates life.

With warmth, realism, and gentle satire, H. G. Wells paints a vivid portrait of class mobility and social pretension. Kipps is both a coming-of-age story and a thoughtful critique of Edwardian society, celebrating honesty, individuality, and the quiet dignity of staying true to oneself.

The Genesis of the Doughnut Club: When John Henry died there seemed to be nothing for me to do but pack up and go back east. I didn't want to do it, but forty-five years of sojourning in this world have taught me that a body has to do a good many things she doesn't want to do, and that most of them turn out to be for the best in the long run.

Six has always been a number we group things around – Six of the best, six of one half a dozen of another, six feet under, six pack, six degrees of separation and a sixth sense are but a few of the ways we use this number.

Such is its popularity that we thought it is also a very good way of challenging and investigating an author’s work to give width, brevity, humour and depth across six of their very best.

In this series we gather together authors whose short stories both rivet the attention and inspire the imagination to visit their gems in a series of six, to roam across an author’s legacy in a few short hours and gain a greater understanding of their writing and, of course, to be lavishly entertained by their ideas, their narrative and their way with words.

These stories can be surprising and sometimes at a tangent to what we expected, but each is fully formed and a marvellous adventure into the world and words of a literary master.
