Synopsis

“Virtue is bold, and goodness never fearful.” —Measure for Measure, act 3, scene 1   Shakespeare’s plays and poems remain as beloved in the twenty-first century as they were in the sixteenth. For all the years between us, the world he inhabited was much like our own—afflicted by political turmoil, divisiveness, war, extreme weather, recurrent plagues, the fouling of natural resources on which everyone relied, and discrimination against people who were different. The bard’s remedy for these troubles was to offer respite and inspiration to his audience through his writing.   In this book, author Kim Bradley teases out the inspirational messages in Shakespeare’s works. Every chapter is a journey through one of his most notable plays, each with actionable life lessons to be learned from his writing. Explore the power of acts of service with Twelfth Night, or the joy of forgiveness with The Tempest. From the importance of hospitality to the benefits of communing with nature, Shakespeare’s wise instruction can help you master the art of living.   “Yes, there is sickness, death, conflict, and division in today’s world,” Bradley writes. “More important, however, there are sunrises, starry skies, friendships, and love. Shakespeare invites us to enjoy the latter while remembering the former and shows how balancing an appreciation for both is key to living the good life.”

Finally, a philosophy book that will make you laugh until you différance.
Ever wanted to sound unbearably pretentious at dinner parties? Wondered how one French philosopher managed to make an entire career out of writing sentences no human being could understand? Curious why your literature professor keeps muttering about "the death of the author" while staring vacantly into space?
Look no further than "Derrida's Deconstruction: Tearing Texts Apart Because He Had Nothing Better To Do" – the latest installment in the bestselling "Cogito Ergo Nope!" series that makes philosophy both accessible and hilarious.
In this merciless exploration of Jacques Derrida and his world-altering inability to get to the point, you'll discover:
Why spelling "difference" with an "a" made one man inexplicably famous
How to sound profound while saying absolutely nothing
Why buildings suddenly started looking like they were designed during earthquakes
The academic equivalent of "my dog ate my homework": textual undecidability
How to deconstruct any text while sitting in your pajamas
The surprising insights hidden beneath mountains of incomprehensible jargon
Written with savage wit and unexpected clarity, this book explains deconstruction better than Derrida ever could (though, to be fair, so could a moderately articulate toddler).
Whether you're a confused student, a curious reader, or someone who enjoys watching inflated intellectual balloons get popped by the sharp pin of sarcasm, this book is your perfect introduction to the man who made simplicity unfashionable and gave academic writing permission to be terrible forever.
Warning: May cause uncontrollable laughter, eye-rolling, and the sudden ability to see through academic nonsense. Not recommended for tenured professors with no sense of humor.

After the last shots of World War II were fired and the process of rebuilding Germany and Europe began, the Western Allies and the Soviet Union each tried to obtain the services of the Third Reich's leading scientists, especially those involved in rocketry, missile technology, and aerospace research. Naturally, this was a delicate affair due to the fact many of the German scientists were not only active Nazis but had helped the Nazi war machine terrorize the world. At the same time, by the late war period, the Anglo-American Allies formed a clear picture of the Soviet state. Though forced to ally with the USSR's dictator, Josef Stalin, the West came to understand Communist Russia represented yet another hungry totalitarian power, and thus a very real threat to an independent Europe. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill realized the menacing character of the Soviets from the Katyn Forest Massacre of Polish army officers, if not before, while the Americans only gradually shed a naïve assumption of continued Russian friendliness after the war.
The result was the American-led “Operation Paperclip” on the Western side, which resulted in German scientists putting their expertise at the disposal of the U.S. and other NATO members. Operation Paperclip aimed not only to obtain the benefits of German scientific advances for the United States but also to deny them to the potentially hostile Soviets.
The Western approach, however self-interested, typically met with voluntary compliance on the German scientists' parts. In contrast, the Soviet answer to Paperclip, Operation Osoaviakhim, used the implied threat of imprisonment, torture, and death, the characteristic tools of Stalinist Russia, to coerce assistance from German scientists and engineers following the war. These men yielded rich dividends to the Soviet state in terms of achieving at least temporary technical parity with the USSR's western rivals.
