Henry Ford loved mechanical things: springs and gears, cogs and wheels, and things that clicked and ticked and turned. One hot summer day in 1876, Henry and his father were riding to Detroit in their farm wagon. Suddenly there was a huffing-puffing monster heading straight toward them. It was a road-roller, and it was lumbering down the road all by itself. That was the day Henry started thinking about horseless riding machines--and he never stopped. In We'll Race You, Henry, young readers will discover the origins of one of the most popular cars of all time--the Model T--as well as the daring side of its inventor and the early days of automobile racing.

For millennia, people considered dragons to be real, and the vivid lore of dragons has touched societies from Central America to Europe, and from Egypt to China. The popularity of dragons can easily be assessed by the number of motion pictures that include them as an integral part of their narrative, from the friendly dragons of children’s cartoons to the monsters being bred underground to unleash their horrors on humanity. Indeed, some of humanity’s deepest cultural myths have included dragons, from the Greek and Georgian tale of Jason and the Argonauts to the stories from ancient China that influence modern New Year’s festivities.
The English word “dragon” comes from the Greek word “drakon,” which means “snake,” and while people today may have a hard time imagining a dragon as a simple snake, some scientists think that the international nature of the myth is based on the presence of snakes on nearly every continent. Oxford professor of medieval European literature Carolyne Larrington explained, “The anthropologist David E. Jones has suggested that the dragon myth takes its origins from an innate fear of snakes, genetically encoded in humans from the time of our earliest differentiation from other primates. It is true, of course, that it makes evolutionary sense to avoid dangerous animals of every kind, but it is less clear why people should invent stories about imaginary oversized serpents in particular. Nevertheless, there is a clear benefit to tales that warn children against straying into perilous marshy areas where the serpent might seize them, or against scrambling up treacherous mountain sides in search of monsters and treasure hoards.”

Hera has been pushed to the edge. Her power, authority, and legacy have been tarnished time and again by the calloused actions of her husband Zeus, but with the birth of the demigod hero Hercules her shame has been laid bare for all to see. To reclaim her sovereignty, Hera is willing to risk her throne, and even her life, to see Hercules meet his end. To this end, she plots a coup on Olympus and embroils herself in an alliance with a monster beyond even her control.
Secrets are revealed behind every turn. Rivalries and alliances are made and broken as Fate tests the resolve of mortal and immortal alike. In the aftermath, the far-flung consequences of their battle will leave the deepest wounds and blood on the hands of the denizens of Heaven and Earth.
This is Greek Mythology as it should be, seeped in love and hate, thrill and tragedy. Now performed with vivid and intense narration, this tale follows the young Hercules as he confronts his greatest challenge. The battle looms, leading to an outcome that will change his life forever.
The Hydra is the first in Varan Merten’s Cycle of Hercules novels. Each book in this series features the most dynamic monsters in the journey of Greece’s greatest hero. Each of these creatures challenges the demigod in a different way and leaves a mark that he will carry for the rest of his days. Choice and Fate blur as Hercules regains his freedom from the Labors and sets out to reclaim his rightful place among the gods.
