This was the ship that had destroyed System patrols; later a full battle fleet of the Solar System's most powerful space fighters. The interceptors had been unable to establish communication of any sort; and they were blasted into fiery chunks of space debris before getting close enough to use their own guns. 
  "Well, here they are, Clemens," the Commander said aloud, "and getting uncomfortably close to the System. It looks like they're some other System's dominant intelligence, and we've got planets they want." 
  "Yes, sir," said the other, "and here we are, with the fastest, most heavily armed space fighter ever built—in the System." 
  "In the Universe," snapped McPartland. His full lips curved into a grim smile. "Under sealed orders which every citizen from Pluto to Mercury knows are: 'Destroy this ship—or it conquers our System.'"

  Before the Fact by Zenna Henderson - Renwick, with too much time on his hands, was bored. He turned to Mead, in his discontent, only to discover some frightening aspects of his friend’s hobby of collecting children’s games and rhymes. 
  Zenna Henderson was born in 1917 in Tucson, Arizona and began reading science fiction when she was 12. She graduated from Arizona State College, now Arizona State University, in 1940 and taught school, primarily in Tucson, mainly first grade. Zenna is one of 203 women recognized in the book “Partners in wonder : women and the birth of science fiction” who wrote stories that were published in US Science Fiction Magazines from 1926 to 1965. 
  Her debut science fiction short story appeared in 1951, marking the beginning of a prolific career that saw over 60 of her works featured in pulp sci-fi magazines.   This is a collection of a few of my personal favorite stories by Hans Christian Andersen that I most loved as a child and still enjoy as an adult. The Emperor's New Clothes was funny from my earliest years because even then I could see that it poked fun at adults and their silly pretensions; The Ugly Duckling I think, was enjoyable because the bullied little one turned out so well and it had a happy ending although I thought even as a child that the protagonist should have gone back and brought those mean barnyard fowl down a peg or two. Little Tiny or Thumbellina is just a sweet story with adventure thrown in and The Brave Little Tin Soldier was and is a tribute to bravery and steadfastness. The last story, There Is No Doubt About It ! was so obviously silly and fun even to a young child and frankly, I just love the way the animals talk in this story.
