Transformation is a Gothic short story by Mary Shelley that explores pride, temptation, and the dangerous bargains people make with themselves. It follows Guido, a young man undone by arrogance, who encounters a grotesque dwarf offering him a terrible trade — one that will give him power and revenge at the cost of his very identity. The tale blends moral fable with supernatural unease, showing how a single reckless choice can unmake a life. Shelley uses atmosphere, confession, and shifting identity rather than overt horror, creating a story that feels more like a warning whispered from experience.
Though brief, Transformation carries the same concerns that run through Shelley’s larger work: the fragility of the self, the consequences of unchecked impulses, and the thin line between the human and the monstrous. Its power comes not from shock but from recognition — the sense that Guido’s downfall begins inside him, long before the supernatural enters the room.
Mary Shelley (1797–1851) was an English novelist and essayist best known as the author of Frankenstein, a book that helped shape both science fiction and modern horror. The daughter of philosophers Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin, she grew up among writers and radicals, later traveling through Europe with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Across her novels, short stories, and journals, she explored grief, ambition, invention, and moral responsibility. Works like The Last Man, Mathilda, and Transformation show the breadth of her voice beyond Frankenstein. Shelley wrote in a time when women authors were often dismissed, yet her ideas outlived the age that doubted her. Today she is regarded as one of the foundational figures of speculative literature.

Forsyte’s Retreat by Winston Marks - Sextus Rollo Forsyte had his trouble with the bottle, but nothing out of a bottle ever produced such a hotel as the Mahoney-Plaza: only 260 rooms ... only two guests to a room ... but accommodating 5200 guests—all at the same time!... Floor please?
At last he was second in line. He squared his shoulders and pulled at the lower edges of his black double-breasted suitcoat to erase the travel wrinkles. The applicant ahead of him exploded the words, "Nuts! I'll leave town first. I just came from the Phony-Plaza. You can take that squirrel-cage and—"
"Next!" the employment agent called sadly. Sextus Rollo Forsyte moved up and sat in the oak chair before the oak desk and faced the oak-featured man with the jobs.
"Forsyte is the name," Sextus reminded. The man riffled through the application cards.
"Yes. Indeed. Lucky you came back. I have a fine position for you, Mr. Forsyte. Right in your line." He held out a blue slip. "The general manager's position is open at the Mahoney-Plaza. Six hundred a month, board and room. Now if you will...."
Sextus staggered from the employment office stunned.
He could handle the job, all right. As he'd said on the application form, in his forty years he had managed half a dozen large hotels. But they were handing him this plum without comment on his failure to fill in the spaces marked: COMPLETE REFERENCES (names and addresses).
He shrugged. They did a lot of things different in California. The most he had hoped for was a waiter's job or maybe a short order cook in a fry joint. But if they wanted to ignore the hotel associations' black list, he wouldn't argue.
Sextus Forsyte craved anonymity with the passion that most men seek fame and glory. Beneath his suave, mature exterior beat the shrinking heart of a perennial hermit whose delight was an adventure book and a bottle of whiskey.

He’s met celebrities, strangers stop “the Cookie Kid” on the street, and he’s even headed to NYC to be in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade with his dad. Ellis is ready for his star turn, playing harmonica on national television—until his big break turns into the most embarrassing moment of his life.   Ellis’s confidence bubble has officially burst, and he tries to keep a low profile at school. To make matters worse, Ellis's dad is going gaga for a new girlfriend, and DJ Wishbone is pushed out of his radio station—and takes over Ellis’s place in the store. Can Ellis help those he loves, carve out a place for himself in Dad's new life, and recover his confidence? This charming semi-autobiographic novel proves that anything is possible with good music, good friends, loving family, and great cookies.
