Beschreibung

The Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War, spanned from November 1, 1955, to April 30, 1975, and took place in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The conflict was officially between North and South Vietnam and was part of the broader Indochina Wars. North Vietnam received support from the Soviet Union, China, and other communist allies, while the US, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, Thailand, and other anti-communist nations backed South Vietnam. Lasting over two decades, the war has been characterized by some as a Cold War-era proxy war. It included not only the battle in Vietnam but also the Laotian Civil War and the Cambodian Civil War, leading to all three countries becoming communist states by 1975.

The roots of the conflict can be traced back to the First Indochina War, which involved the French colonial administration against the Viet Minh, a left-wing revolutionary force. After the French forces' departure from Indochina in 1954, the United States assumed financial and military support for the South Vietnamese government. The Viet Cong (VC), also known as the National Liberation Front (NLF), emerged in South Vietnam as a common front and began a guerrilla campaign, with guidance from North Vietnam. North Vietnam invaded Laos in the mid-1950s to support the insurgents and constructed the Ho Chi Minh Trail for supplying and reinforcing the Viet Cong. Under President John F. Kennedy's Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) program, US involvement escalated from fewer than a thousand military advisors in 1959 to 23,000 in 1964. By 1963, North Vietnam had sent 40,000 troops to fight in South Vietnam.

Jacques Lacan: The Basics provides a clear and succinct introduction to the work of Jacques Lacan, one of the key thinkers of the twentieth century.

Lacan's ideas are applied in the study of the humanities, politics, and psychology, as well as contemporary media and the arts, but their complexity makes them impenetrable to many. This book is unique in explaining the key concepts and context, from Lacan's understanding of psychoanalysis to drive and desire, in an accessible way without diluting them beyond meaning. Examples from popular culture are used throughout to emphasize the ideas being discussed and a full glossary and list of resources encourages additional exploration.

This engaging and accessible text is essential for all those interested in Lacan and his work, as well as students of psychology, psychoanalysis, literature, politics, cultural studies, film studies, and more.

From the award-winning author of On Fragile Waves comes an inspirational, surprising guide to creation and creativity, and how both bring us closer to God.   Centuries ago, sound theology and good fiction were friends and not strangers. Decades ago, authors strove not for self-expression and self-disclosure but for a mastery of craft and language and books that transformed the reader with wisdom and love. In more recent years, the old ideals have been exchanged for lesser ones.   Few guides to writing, which tend to focus on mechanics, point of view, and plot, address the more important matters of meaning, depth, and heart. But it is the latter qualities that make a book a blessing and gift to both writer and reader. Like Christ’s invitation to follow, they demand a risk and sacrifice of the self and all it holds dear. Writers from George MacDonald to James Baldwin understood this, but in recent years this understanding has been lost. Making old things new, this book proposes an ethics of reading, writing, and living based on truth and love.  Break, Blow, Burn, & Make returns the literary conversation to the practices of co-creation with God. Part bugle call, part compass for writing and for life, and part love song to the books that set us on fire, it offers those who are willing to receive it the courage to live, read, and write more deeply and honestly.

The evolutionary path from the original primates to modern man is a long one and has taken many twists and turns, but naturally, as the fossil record grows, scientists gain a more complete understanding of our own mental and physical history in terms of genetics and anatomy. However, the correct order and relationships of the various specimen types are difficult to pin down. Many representative samples have been found in such minute amounts as to not preclude anomalies. They have been discovered in various stages of wear. Modern features did not occur simultaneously or uniformly, taking millions of years to become manifest in later types. Up to the present day’s Homo sapiens, examples of the main types have been hybrids of older and more modern features.
One of the earliest species of the genus Homo to be discovered is Homo habilis, which basically means “handy man.” The name comes from the belief at the time of its discovery that this species was the first to start using stone tools. The first fossils to be uncovered in Olduvai Gorge were from the same stratigraphic layer as simple stone tools. Fossils of the crania and postcranial skeleton for this species have been found in both eastern and southern Africa and date to around 2.5–1.6 million years ago.
Given the gradual changes that take place in evolution, Homo habilis shares a number of characteristics that are similar to the genus Australopithecus, such as in the postcranial elements. That said, the size and shape of the Homo habilis skull are markedly different. The size of the brain is much larger relative to the size of the body, being around 680 cc. In order to house a larger brain, the skull features a more vertical frontal bone, creating a more vertical forehead. The brow ridges that sit on the lower portion of the frontal bone are also reduced in size.
