Beschreibung

The Spanish Civil War spanned from 1936 to 1939 and was a domestic conflict in Spain. The Nationalists, comprising Falangists, monarchists, conservatives, and traditionalists, rallied around General Francisco Franco and sought to overthrow the left-leaning Popular Front government of the Second Spanish Republic, forming an alliance with communists and syndicalist anarchists. The war garnered various interpretations globally, seen as a class struggle, a clash between dictatorship and democratic republicanism, and a power struggle between fascism and communism. Claude Bowers, the U.S. ambassador to Spain during World War II, even referred to it as a "dress rehearsal." The Nationalists emerged victorious in early 1939 and dominated Spain until Franco's death in November 1975.

The conflict began with a pronunciamiento against the Republican government, led by General Emilio Mola with General José Sanjurjo as a figurehead. President Manuel Azaña headed the coalition of Republicans, backed by communist and socialist parties in the Cortes. Supporting the Nationalist faction were CEDA, monarchists (including Alfonsists and conservative Carlists), and the fascist political party Falange Española de las JONS. Franco eventually emerged as the dominant leader of the Nationalists after the demise of Sanjurjo, Emilio Mola, and Manuel Goded Llopis.

The Psychology of Spies and Spying tells the story of the people involved in spying: the human sources (agents) who betray their country or organisation and the professional intelligence officers who manage the collection and reporting process. It provides a rigorous psychological analysis of the personality and motivation of individuals involved in spying.
This book shows the importance of developing trust between agents and handlers, between agencies and their government and ultimately the public. It shows how agent handlers, operating in environments of complete secrecy, need to manage dark side behaviours because agents are selected for their access to secrets, not for their qualities. It explains why motivation is rarely simple since it is invariably a combination of many issues. It explains how fiction writers are good at developing plots and the characterisation of spies, but few capture the motivation of agents well. Finally spy gadgets and techniques are also described in detail. Included are twelve agent case studies in which most were motivated by ideology, had significant misfortune in their youth and offered their services rather than being coerced into betrayal.
The Psychology of Spies and Spying promotes the view that in the world of intelligence, it is trust not betrayal which dominates the mindset.

"Common Sense" is a political pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1776. It played a crucial role in inspiring American colonists to take up arms against the British and fight for independence.
In the pamphlet, Paine argues that it is only common sense for the American colonies to break away from Britain and become an independent nation. He criticizes the British monarchy and the idea of hereditary succession, arguing that power should be based on merit and ability, not birthright.
Paine also argues that the British government has failed to protect the interests of the American colonists and that they should be free to govern themselves. He appeals to the sense of patriotism and self-interest of his readers, arguing that American independence would lead to greater prosperity and a better way of life.
Overall, "Common Sense" is a passionate and persuasive argument for American independence, written in clear and accessible language that appealed to a wide audience. It remains one of the most influential political writings in American history.

A strong gut feeling led Manuela to volunteer at an Ayahuasca Healing Resort in the Amazon Rainforest. Within a few weeks, she leaves her home in Mallorca to travel to Peru. The plan was, to interpret for foreigners and shamans before and after ceremonies and learn from shamans and visitors. She ended up staying 3 months and participating during 19 ceremonies herself. Spiritual insights and biographic background stories of an as cold and grey perceived environment make clear how we see the world, the way we see the world and why what we think is true, is just a story, designed by our own mind. Her conclusion: What you think is true, is just what you think is true. A story. An interpretation though the filters of the mind. To find your way you cannot just think, study and contemplate. Ayahuasca is not the solution either. It takes daring to feel in every moment and face our inner world to heal and bring out our gifts. Her message: Be yourself, not your story!
