Beschreibung

George Gordon Byron, the 6th Lord Byron, graced the literary landscape as an eminent English poet and esteemed peer, bearing the title of Baron Byron. Within the realm of Romanticism, he stands as a towering figure, often hailed as one of England's preeminent poetic voices. His influence persists, resonating through the annals of literary history.

Notably, the enduring allure of his narrative epics, such as "Don Juan" and "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage," has etched Byron's name in the collective consciousness. Moreover, his shorter compositions, including the evocative "Hebrew Melodies," found resonance and popularity among avid readers.

A wanderer of the European landscapes, Byron's sojourns led him across the picturesque vistas of Italy, where he immersed himself in the cultural tapestry of Venice, Ravenna, and Pisa. Notably, his seven-year sojourn in Italy deepened his friendship with the acclaimed poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. This period of intellectual exchange and camaraderie added layers to Byron's creative journey.

The latter part of Byron's life unfolded against the backdrop of the Greek Conflict of Independence, where he assumed a gallant role, commanding campaigns against the Ottoman Empire. His valor and commitment to the Greek cause endeared him to the Greek populace, elevating his legacy in their eyes. The final chapter of Byron's life was marked by his demise from a fever following the arduous First and Second Siege of Missolonghi in 1824, leaving an indelible mark on the pages of history at the tender age of 36.

Julia Child's 20' x 14' kitchen was a serious workspace and recipe-testing lab that exuded a sense of mid-century homey comfort. Now, it has been on display at the National Museum of American History in Washington, DC, for most of the past twenty years.

Between lively narrative and detailed commentary on Julia's favorite kitchen gadgets, Julia Child's Kitchen illuminates the stories behind the room's design, use, significance, and legacy, showing how deeply Julia Child continues to influence food today. The kitchen contains more than one thousand parts and pieces—tools, appliances, utensils, furniture, artwork, knick-knacks, books, and bits of whimsy—all reflecting Julia's status as an accomplished chef, gastronome, delightful cooking teacher, television trailblazer, women's advocate, mentor, and generous, jovial friend. The kitchen's layout, design, and contents reflect Julia's philosophy of cooking as well as a period of social and cultural change in the United States, providing a platform for exploring such post-World War II themes as shifting attitudes about gender roles and domesticity or the tension between tradition and innovation regarding culinary tools, materials, cooking, and food itself. This book, a beautiful tribute to Julia Child's legacy, will be a must-listen for every home cook and Julia Child fan.

Thales of Miletus, often hailed as the first philosopher in Western history, was born in the ancient Greek city of Miletus, around 624 BCE. As a figure whose contributions have shaped the course of philosophy, science, and mathematics, Thales stands as a foundational figure in intellectual history. Although much of his life remains shrouded in mystery due to the passage of time, the few details that have survived reveal a thinker whose ideas and insights went beyond the conventional beliefs of his era.
Thales is traditionally considered the first to break away from mythological explanations of the world. Prior to Thales, the Greek understanding of nature was largely dominated by myth and religious explanations, where gods and divine forces were invoked to explain the natural phenomena. Thales, however, proposed a radical shift by seeking rational, natural explanations. He is best known for his theory that water is the fundamental substance from which everything originates. This insight marks a profound moment in intellectual history because it moved away from mythological thinking and introduced the idea of a unifying principle underlying all things.
In addition to his contributions to philosophy, Thales was also a mathematician and astronomer, and his influence in these fields is considerable. He is credited with being the first to predict a solar eclipse, using his understanding of the stars and celestial movements. His work in geometry is equally important—he is famously known for Thales’ Theorem, which laid the groundwork for the development of geometry. This theorem states that if two points are on a circle, and a line is drawn through them, then the center of that line will always lie on a straight line through the center of the circle. This geometric insight shows his ability to understand and systematize mathematical concepts that were previously unexamined.

This program is read by the author. From the detective who found the Golden State Killer, a memoir of investigating America’s toughest cold cases and the rewards–and toll–of a life solving crime.I order another bourbon, neat. This is the drink that will flip the switch. I don’t even know how I got here, to this place, to this point. Something is happening to me lately. I’m drinking too much. My sheets are soaking wet when I wake up from nightmares of decaying corpses. I order another drink and swig it, trying to forget about the latest case I can’t shake.Crime solving for me is more complex than the challenge of the hunt, or the process of piecing together a scientific puzzle. The thought of good people suffering drives me, for better or worse, to the point of obsession. People always ask how I am able to detach from the horrors of my work. Part of it is an innate capacity to compartmentalize; the rest is experience and exposure, and I’ve had plenty of both. But I have always taken pride in the fact that I can keep my feelings locked up to get the job done. It’s only been recently that it feels like all that suppressed darkness is beginning to seep out. When I look back at my long career, there is a lot I am proud of. I have caught some of the most notorious killers of the twenty-first century and brought justice and closure for their victims and families. I want to tell you about a lifetime solving these cold cases, from Laci Peterson to Jaycee Dugard to the Pittsburg homicides to, yes, my twenty-year-long hunt for the Golden State Killer. But a deeper question eats at me as I ask myself, at what cost? I have sacrificed relationships, joy—even fatherhood—because the pursuit of evil always came first. Did I make the right choice? It’s something I grapple with every day. Yet as I stand in the spot where a young girl took her last breath, as I look into the eyes of her family, I know that, for me, there has never been a choice. “I don’t know if I can solve your case,” I whisper. “But I promise I will do my best.”It is a promise I know I can keep.A Macmillan Audio production from Celadon Books
