Synopsis

In the heart of Dallas where the Trinity River's bank cradles warmth from morning fires, a tale unfurls - modest as a tale but grand as the hopes within. Amidst the grit of street living, an unexpected adventure beckons—a journey from hardship to the unfamiliar embrace of four solid walls and the companionship that sustains through trials. This is the story of unlikely friendships fostered over meals shared under open skies, of lives intersecting in pursuit of survival, work, education, love, and the pursuit of a sanctuary to call home. It is a story of transformation, not just of spaces with fresh paint and the determination of those willing to wield the brush, but of hearts and minds opened to possibilities once veiled by circumstance. Here within these pages lies an odyssey; an exploration of human resilience, the power of community and the silent orchestrations of the divine presenting gifts of second chances.
In this heartwarming tapestry of life, an individual's journey through the trials of work and higher education blooms into a testament of resilience and fellowship. Woven within are threads of compassion, where unlikely allies emerge to offer a lifeline in times of struggle, affirming the profound power of human connection. As we follow the protagonist’s path, graced by divine intervention and fortuitous encounters, we witness a celebration of spirit and help. This narrative is an ode to those who reach out a hand in support and to the beauty of embracing our shared humanity, as it underscores the transformative spirit of faith, kinship, and the enduring pursuit of knowledge.

Amelia Ann Blanford Edwards was born on 7th June 1831 in Islington, London. She was educated at home by her mother and showed early promise as a writer, publishing her first poem at the age of 7 and her first story at 12. Thereafter several popular periodicals published her poetry, stories and articles.

In addition she also illustrated some of her own writings and painted scenes from books she had read. This talent was not supported by her parents, who saw an artist’s life as scandalous. Undeterred Amelia took up composing and performing music until a bout of typhus caused throat damage. Other interests soon followed until, early in the 1850s, Amelia focused exclusively on writing. Her early novels were well received, and with ‘Barbara's History’ in 1864, a work revolving around bigamy, her reputation was established.

Amelia’s pen was also the purveyor of ghost stories for magazines and are still anthologized as classic tales to this day.

In January 1851, Amelia became engaged, apparently to please her parents, but she quickly broke it off. In reality her emotional attachments were almost exclusively with women. From the early 1860s she lived with Ellen Drew Braysher, a widow 27 years her senior, until both women died in early 1892. During this relationship other women also entered and left her life. Her frequent travelling companion, Lucy Renshaw, accompanied her to Egypt in the winter of 1873 and there she found a life-changing interest in Egyptology. Aware of increasing threats from tourism and modern development she became an advocate for their research and preservation.

To advance the work Amelia largely abandoned much of her writing in favour of Egyptology and even took on strenuous lecture tours to raise funds.

After catching influenza, Amelia Edwards, ‘the Godmother of Egyptology’ died on 15th April 1892 at Weston-super-Mare. She was 60.

The BRAND NEW uplifting, feel-good romantic read from bestselling author Lisa Hobman 💫🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Must-read for fans of Jessica Redland, Julie Shackman and Eliza J. Scott!
What would you wish for if you had one chance?
Esme Cassidy had two dreams growing up: to be a famous film star, and to own Drumblair Castle.
Sadly, overly cautious parents put paid to a career in front of the camera, instead encouraging her to study towards a ‘proper job’, and Lady Olivia MacBain is the current custodian of ‘her castle’.
After graduating and a year travelling, Esme returns home broken-hearted and throws herself into her new role as Lady Olivia’s PA at Drumblair Castle. It’s not quite her original dream but at least she’s living at the castle in one of the estate cottages with her housemate and friend, handsome, yet quirky, groundsman Judd.
With the news that the castle will be used as a film set for a period movie, Esme gets to witness first-hand the career she missed out on. And with her teenage crush in the starring role, she can’t believe her luck. But he wouldn’t be interested in a girl like her, surely?

“The Wrong Box” is a wonderful, farcical black comedy co written by Robert Louis Stevenson and Lloyd Osbourne (Stevenson’s stepson) in 1889.
The story is built around that mainstay of many a farce, a family squabbling over money. In this case it is the proceeds of a Tontine, a once popular investment scheme.
A cast of colourful characters, worthy of Dickens, are thrown together, either in the pursuit of money, or in the disposal of a mysterious corpse which makes surprising and gruesome appearances throughout the story.
Head Stories Audio presents "The Wrong Box" by Robert Louis Stevenson and Lloyd Osbourne. Narrated by Simon Hester

So the big question remains: Is true love worth everything?
