  In 1451, Prince Henry the Navigator helped fund and develop a new type of ship, the caravel, that featured triangular lateen sails and would be able to travel in the open ocean and sail against the wind. In 1488, Bartholomew Diaz rounded the southern tip of Africa, named the Cape of Good Hope by King John of Portugal, and entered the Indian Ocean from the Atlantic. 
  One explorer, Christopher Columbus, sought funding from the Portuguese to search for a passage to Asia by sailing westwards, but he was rejected. At this time in the late 15th century, Portugal’s domination of the western African sea routes prompted the neighboring Crown of Castile and the Catholic monarchs in modern Spain to search for an alternative route to south and east Asia (termed Indies), so they provided Columbus with the funding he required. By the time Christopher Columbus started setting back east from the New World after landing there in October 1492, he had explored San Salvador in the Bahamas (which he thought was Japan), Cuba (which he thought was China), and Hispaniola, the source of gold. As the common story goes, Columbus, en route back to Spain from his first journey, called in at Lisbon as a courtesy to brief the Portuguese King John II of his discovery of the New World. King John subsequently protested that according to the 1479 Treaty of Alcáçovas, which divided the Atlantic Ocean between Spanish and Portuguese spheres of influence, the newly discovered lands rightly belonged to Portugal. To make clear the point, a Portuguese fleet was authorized and dispatched west from the Tagus to lay claim to the “Indies,” which prompted a flurry of diplomatic activity in the court of Ferdinand and Isabella.

  Ayn Rand's philosophy, known as Objectivism, centers around a few key principles: 
    
  Metaphysics: Rand asserts the primacy of existence. She argues that reality exists independent of our perceptions or beliefs, and that it is knowable through reason. 
    
  Epistemology: She champions reason as the only means of acquiring knowledge. According to Rand, reason is the faculty that identifies and integrates the material provided by our senses. 
    
  Ethics: Rand's ethical theory is based on rational self-interest or egoism. She argues that individuals should act in their own best interest, and that this is both moral and practical. The virtue of selfishness, as she terms it, means pursuing one’s own happiness as the highest moral aim. 
    
  Politics: Rand advocates for laissez-faire capitalism as the ideal political system. She believes that the government’s sole role should be to protect individual rights through the police, military, and judiciary, but not to interfere in the economy or individual choices. 
    
  Aesthetics: In her view, art is a reflection of an artist's values and vision of life. She supports Romantic Realism, where art is a representation of life as it could be and should be, celebrating human potential and achievement.

  Pompeii - History of the Roman...

  Pompeii was an ancient Roman city situated near modern-day Naples in the Campania region of Italy, within what is now the comune of Pompei. It thrived as a bustling urban center until the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. This violent explosion buried Pompeii, along with the neighboring cities of Herculaneum and several luxurious villas in the surrounding countryside, including those at Boscoreale and Stabiae, beneath a thick blanket of volcanic ash and pumice. The depth of this sudden entombment ranged from four to six meters (13 to 20 feet), sealing the city and its inhabitants in a chilling moment of suspended animation.  
  When excavations began centuries later, Pompeii revealed itself as an unprecedented time capsule of Roman life. The city was preserved in remarkable detail, offering a rare and invaluable glimpse into the daily routines, architectural styles, and cultural expressions of its people. However, the early excavations, conducted with rudimentary methods, often led to the destruction of crucial evidence. Despite these losses, Pompeii remains one of the most well-documented archaeological sites, providing scholars with insights into the lives of Romans that would have otherwise been lost to history.
