Synopsis

The Essential Karl Marx is a compelling anthology capturing the dynamic interplay of social theory and revolutionary ideology characteristic of Marx's most influential works. The collection spans a range of literary styles from incisive theoretical formulations and critiques of political economy to impassioned calls for social change. Sitting at the intersection of sociopolitical discourse and economic analysis, this anthology showcases pivotal pieces from each stage of Marx's intellectual journey, deftly curated to illuminate the enduring relevance and profound impact of his ideas on contemporary thought. Standout selections underscore the radical yet deeply analytical spirit that propels Marx's enduring legacy. Bringing together contributions from Karl Marx, Florence Kelley, and N.I. Stone, this volume offers readers access to a wealth of perspectives on Marxist thought and its application across various historical and cultural contexts. Florence Kelley's work as a social reformer and N.I. Stone's contributions to economic theory provide complementary insights, enriching the overarching themes of class struggle, labor rights, and economic justice. The diverse backgrounds of these contributors emphasize the global and cross-disciplinary reach of Marx's ideology, underscoring the anthology's alignment with pivotal movements such as labor reform and socialist theory. This collection stands as both a guide and exploration for readers eager to delve into Karl Marx's multifaceted legacy through the prism of diverse perspectives. It offers an unparalleled opportunity to engage with foundational texts and insightful reflections on their impact across different cultural milieus. The Essential Karl Marx should be embraced for its educational breadth, enlightening insights, and its unique ability to foster a robust dialogue between past and present critical thought. This anthology is indispensable for those seeking to understand the profound resonances of Marxism in contemporary society.

When both levees and governments failed in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, an organization calling itself the Common Ground Collective formed to become the largest anarchist inspired organization in modern US history. In solidarity with people in New Orleans, Common Ground built medical clinics, distributed aid, formed neighborhood assemblies and created food security through community gardens. The group also defied unjust laws by resisting home demolitions, and defended communities from white militias and police brutality.
Black Flags and Windmills—equal parts memoir, history and organizing philosophy—maps the intertwining of Common Ground co-founder scott crow’s radical experiences and ideas with Katrina’s reality, vividly illustrating how people under extraordinary circumstances built local grassroots power and collective liberation. It is a story of resisting indifference, rebuilding hope amidst collapse, and struggling against the grain to create better worlds.

I am one of the many admirers of Shakespeare's genius. I have even written a book about his unique ability to remain relevant to our contemporary concerns. The work was titled The Modernity of Shakespeare1 and it was very well received, and even earned a very laudatory foreword by W ole Soyinka, Nobel laureate in Literature, and professor of English literature. So it is no surprise that when I founded the New Library of Alexandria in Egypt, I also organized an annual Shakespeare event - usually organized on the 23rd of April if at all possible - in which many eminent literary critics participated. And as we focused on the plays rather than the long poems or the sonnets, some actors and occasionally cinematographers also participated. Students from the departments of English in many universities across Egypt, also invariably participated.
At that annual event I usually presented a special lecture on Shakespeare. This went on for almost 15 years.

My Secret Life is an anonymously penned memoir written during a period from the 1840s to the 1880s by a wealthy and sex obsessed English gentleman who refers to himself simply as ‘Walter’. Part confessional, part investigative erotic journalism, it meticulously documents every detail of the author’s prolific sexual encounters, offering us in the process an eye and thigh opening account of life behind closed doors in the Victorian age.

Women, in both mind and body, were the all consuming object of Walter’s interest. From early youth through to old age his quest for erotic discovery and adventure with them was never diminished.

Unlike contemporary 19th century erotic texts, such as The Pearl, whose sole object was to titillate, Walter’s interest in his subjects did not end with the extinguishing of the carnal flame. His hunger to understand the circumstances and minds of the women he encountered is never upstaged by the sex. Their potted life histories, their most intimate desires and acts were shared with him and in turn meticulously recorded by him, written down verbatim while still fresh in his mind.

The resulting poignant record of a lost era and the intimate moments of the women who inhabited it offer us a remarkable insight into the 19th century that cannot be gleaned from any other source.

The complete unabridged text is being released as a fully scored audiofilm (an audio book with accompanying music soundtrack) by film composer Dominic Crawford Collins.

For all its brevity, Intermezzo is a beautiful and deeply profound piece, rightfully considered Kotsubinsky's best work. It speaks of an artist's ongoing struggle to create in the midst of life and all its good, bad, and ugly aspects. It also acknowledges the need to escape and reset - but emphasizes this as a temporary measure only.
