Pursue a Biblical Basis for Your Political Engagement

How do Bible passages written thousands of years ago apply to politics today? What can we learn from America's history of using the Bible in politics? How can we converse with people whose views differ from our own?

In The Ballot and the Bible, Kaitlyn Schiess explores these questions and more. She unpacks examples of how Americans have connected the Bible to politics in the past, highlighting times it was applied well and times it was egregiously misused.

Schiess combines American political history and biblical interpretation to help readers
● faithfully read Scripture
● talk with others about it
● apply it to contemporary political issues--and to their lives

HOLY BIBLE - PROVERBS: NEW LIVING TRANSLATION (NLT) The Holy Bible, New Living Translation, is an authoritative Bible translation, rendered faithfully into today’s English from the ancient texts by 90 leading Bible scholars. The NLT’s living language breathes life into even the most difficult-to-understand Bible passages—but even more powerful are stories of how people’s lives are changing as the words speak directly to their hearts. The New Living Translation is perfect for every age and stage of life, allowing every member of the family to read the same text.   What method did the translators use in making the NLT? The translators of the New Living Translation set out to render the message of the original texts of Scripture into clear, contemporary English. As they did so, they translated as simply and literally as possible when that approach yielded an accurate, clear, and natural English text. Many words and phrases were rendered literally and consistently into English, preserving essential literary and rhetorical devices, ancient metaphors, and word choices that give structure to the text and provide echoes of meaning from one passage to the next. On the other hand, the translators rendered the message more dynamically when the literal rendering was hard to understand, was misleading, or yielded archaic or foreign wording. They clarified difficult metaphors and terms to aid in the reader’s understanding. The translators first struggled with the meaning of the words and phrases in the ancient context; then they rendered the message into clear, natural English. Their goal was to be both faithful to the ancient texts and eminently readable. The result is a translation that is both exegetically accurate and idiomatically powerful. More than 90 Bible scholars, along with a group of accomplished English stylists, worked closely together toward that goal. In the end, the NLT is the result of precise scholarship conveyed in living, contemporary language.

Wisdom is a multifaceted quality that transcends the mere accumulation of facts and figures. It is the ability to perceive the deeper significance behind everyday experiences and to understand the interplay between knowledge and life’s unpredictable nature. Unlike raw information or even learned expertise, wisdom is characterized by a profound sense of balance and clarity that arises from an open mind and a reflective heart. It is an inner compass that guides us through the complexities of human existence, allowing us to navigate moral dilemmas, understand subtle nuances, and ultimately live in harmony with our values and the world around us.
At its core, wisdom emerges from the synthesis of diverse experiences, insights, and personal reflections. It is the culmination of lessons learned from both successes and failures, each contributing to a broader perspective on life. The journey to wisdom involves not only the acquisition of knowledge but also the deliberate practice of introspection. This process enables individuals to filter out the noise of everyday distractions and focus on what truly matters. Through this continuous engagement with our inner selves, we begin to understand that true wisdom is not static but a dynamic process of growth and self-improvement.
A key element of wisdom is the recognition of our own limitations. Understanding that no one can know everything opens the door to humility, which in turn fosters a mindset of continuous learning. This humility allows us to appreciate the complexity of life and respect the insights offered by others, regardless of their background or status. It is in this space of mutual respect and genuine curiosity that the seeds of wisdom are planted, nurtured by a willingness to question, reflect, and adapt. Furthermore, wisdom is not solely an individual pursuit; it flourishes in communities where shared experiences and collective reflection pave the way for deeper understanding.

Beyond questions about skin tone and other physical characteristics, children may wonder where they fit in the world and why people treat them differently. Parents may find themselves ill-equipped for situations they never faced in their own childhoods. What about the Children? deftly provides families formed by interracial marriage or transracial adoption with the guidance and tools they need to help their children embrace, celebrate, and confidently navigate all parts of their heritage.

Author Nicole Doyley shares the challenges of growing up biracial without much guidance for navigating her Black and white worlds as well as the intentionality with which she and her Jamaican husband raise their children. Drawing on a wealth of personal anecdotes, expert insights, and practical advice, she illuminates five core values to help multiracial families thrive. From raising one's own awareness of cultural differences to humbly seeking a diverse community of support to honestly preparing children for specific aspects of racism, What about the Children? covers both the basics and nuances of raising children with a sense of pride in their heritage and a strong, resilient sense of self.
