Synopsis

Mind Reading: Unlocking the Power of Brainwaves explores the fascinating and rapidly advancing field of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). It delves into how scientists are learning to decode neural activity, offering potential breakthroughs in communication, healthcare, and our fundamental understanding of the human mind.

The book highlights how BCIs could revolutionize assistive technology, enabling individuals with paralysis to control prosthetic limbs or communicate through thought. Furthermore, the text acknowledges the ethical considerations that come with such powerful technology, addressing issues like privacy and the potential for misuse.

The book traces the history of neuroscience, explaining the crucial discoveries that have led to our current ability to measure and interpret brainwaves, using techniques like EEG and neuroimaging. It progresses systematically, starting with the basics of neuroscience, then examining various types of BCIs, and finally addressing the ethical and societal implications.

While acknowledging the immense potential of "mind reading" technologies, the book maintains a balanced perspective, addressing both the benefits and the risks associated with this cutting-edge field of science and psychology.

We can all agree—birds are terrible. They're stupid and won't shut up.

Featuring fifty of the absolute worst birds to fly the earth, Kracht identifies each of their most terrible qualities, details exactly why they suck, and shows you why. Including all-new, all-worst fowl, such as: the absolute waste of feathers Cruddy Turdstone (Ruddy Turnstone), the utter a-hole Blank Staring-Eyes Flycrapper (Black Paradise Flycatcher), the outright loser Dowdy Woodfucker (Downy Woodpecker), and many more!

Even the author's previous bird takedown guides are no preparation for this hilariously harrowing collection of squawking, conceited, trash-eating, and even murderous idiots. The horror. The horror . . .

LOVE BIRDS? HATE BIRDS?: For those who hate birds and for bird lovers everywhere with a sense of humor, this handbook is equal parts profane and funny, and—let's face it—true.

ENTERTAINING AND EDUCATIONAL: This uproarious guide to all things wings includes tips for bird identification, musings on the avian population and classification, and more. When the British Government turn down a revolutionary weapons system in favour of the new Euro fighter they don't realise the wrath their decision will cause. The only radar system capable of detecting the new Thor's Hammer is the experimental Spyglass system being transported on a cruise liner commanded by ex-Navy Captain Eric Swanson. Martin Westfarland, designer of Thor's Hammer, decides to teach the British Government a lesson by sinking the liner and destroying Spyglass before passing Thor's Hammer onto the Iraqis who plan to use it to deliver a deadly bio-weapon to the west. Through a series of action-filled events, Swanson and Squadron Leader Gerry Denton are brought together to thwart the terrorist attack, while the SAS are assigned to locate and destroy the chemical lab in the Syrian Desert, which created the virus. Unfortunately the virus has already been loaded onto Thor's Hammer. Thus it falls to Denton to fly the Typhoon Euro fighter against the faster and stealthier Thor's Hammer before it can deliver its deadly payload.

Are the physical laws of our universe finely tuned, such that life can exist? What does this imply about how our universe formed? Questions like these are examined in Nature's Balancing Act, presented for a wide audience. From the Big Bang to present-day research, ranging from gravitational waves to experiments on antimatter, our physical laws are shown to be slightly off balance, allowing life to exist. In its opening chapters, the following is asked: What would happen if the strong nuclear force, which binds protons and neutrons together, were slightly stronger or weaker? We know today that pushing the nuclear force off balance by just a few percent would create a different universe, unlike our own. Also, for life to exist, there must be a slight imbalance in the way matter and antimatter were created in the Big Bang. These are just two examples of the fine tuning of physical laws that must happen for the cosmological conditions to be right for life to exist. If the universe wasn't “just so,” you wouldn't be here to hear about it!Even with a favorable universe, how did life on Earth begin? Can human life continue to exist for millions of years, or will we cause our own extinction? These topics are considered in the book and provide a fascinating look at our existence on Earth and the possibility of life elsewhere.

Better Never to Have Been - The...

Most people believe that they were either benefited or at least not harmed by being brought into existence. Thus, if they ever do reflect on whether they should bring others into existence—rather than having children without even thinking about whether they should—they presume that they do them no harm. Better Never to Have Been challenges these assumptions. David Benatar argues that coming into existence is always a serious harm. Those who never exist cannot be deprived. However, by coming into existence one does suffer quite serious harms that could not have befallen one had one not come into existence. Drawing on the relevant psychological literature, the author shows that there are a number of well-documented features of human psychology that explain why people systematically overestimate the quality of their lives and why they are thus resistant to the suggestion that they were seriously harmed by being brought into existence. The author then argues for the "anti-natal" view—that it is always wrong to have children—and he shows that combining the anti-natal view with common pro-choice views about fetal moral status yield a "pro-death" view about abortion. Although counter-intuitive for many, that implication is defended, not least by showing that it solves many conundrums of moral theory about population.
