  The economic history of Argentina is deeply rooted in its colonial past, which shaped much of the country’s early economic structures and patterns. Argentina, as part of the Spanish Empire, was initially regarded as a peripheral region, with its economic activities largely shaped by the colonial powers’ interests. The Spanish imposed a rigid economic system in which the colony’s natural resources were exploited to benefit Spain, primarily through the export of silver, agricultural products, and other raw materials. This colonial legacy set the stage for Argentina’s agricultural-based economy and influenced the development of land ownership patterns and labor systems that would persist well into the 19th century. 
  During the colonial period, the region that would become Argentina was an important supplier of agricultural products, such as cattle and grains, to the Spanish Empire. Large estates, known as estancias, were established, and much of the labor force was provided by indigenous peoples and African slaves. The development of these estates led to the establishment of an agrarian economy that would remain a cornerstone of Argentina’s economic identity. The concentration of land and wealth in the hands of a few, however, created significant economic inequalities that would become a recurring theme in Argentina’s history. 
  Following Argentina’s independence from Spain in 1816, the young nation faced significant challenges in establishing its economic identity. The economic institutions that had been put in place by the colonial powers were largely centered around the needs of the empire, and there was little infrastructure to support an autonomous economy. The new republic was faced with the task of building a functional economy that could support its growing population while integrating itself into the global economy.

  The Greek War of Independence, which began in 1821, was the culmination of centuries of subjugation under the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Turks had ruled over Greece since the fall of Constantinople in 1453, imposing their control over the Greek-speaking territories of the Eastern Mediterranean. While the Greeks endured under Ottoman rule for nearly four centuries, various socio-political, religious, and economic factors fostered the desire for independence. These factors would eventually fuel a revolution that would reshape Greece’s future and contribute to the broader wave of nationalistic movements across Europe in the 19th century. 
  The Ottoman Empire's control over Greece was characterized by a rigid hierarchical structure. While Greeks were allowed to practice their religion and maintain certain aspects of their culture, they were treated as second-class citizens, subject to high taxes and military conscription. This created deep resentment and a longing for autonomy. However, resistance to Ottoman rule was sporadic and often crushed by the overwhelming power of the Empire. The Greeks, scattered across various islands and mainland regions, lacked the unity needed to mount an effective challenge to Ottoman authority. 
  One of the key elements that ignited the desire for Greek independence was the rise of nationalist and revolutionary ideas in Europe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The French Revolution of 1789 had sparked waves of liberalism and nationalism across the continent, and these ideas reached Greece through intellectuals, students, and traders. The Enlightenment ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity resonated with many Greeks, who saw them as a path toward the freedom they had been denied for centuries.

  The Qing Dynasty, the last imperial dynasty of China, was established in 1644 by the Manchu people, an ethnic group from the northeast of China. The rise of the Qing Dynasty was a result of a combination of military conquest, strategic alliances, and a deep understanding of Chinese traditions. The Manchus, initially a small tribe in what is today known as Manchuria, were able to capitalize on the weakening Ming Dynasty and internal strife within China. This chapter will explore how the Manchu rulers successfully expanded their power and established one of the longest and most influential dynasties in Chinese history. 
  The Manchu people, led by the ambitious and skilled leader Nurhaci, had been unified under his banner in the early 17th century. Nurhaci’s military campaigns in Manchuria helped create a strong foundation for what would later become the Qing Dynasty. After his death in 1626, his son, Hong Taiji, continued to build on his father’s legacy, consolidating power and forming alliances with various Chinese factions. Hong Taiji's strategic foresight helped prepare the Manchus for a successful invasion of China. In 1636, he formally declared the establishment of the Qing Dynasty, marking the official beginning of their imperial rule. 
  By the early 1640s, the Ming Dynasty was in a state of disarray. The empire was plagued by corruption, peasant uprisings, and economic instability. The most notable rebellion was the Li Zicheng-led peasant revolt, which culminated in the fall of the Ming capital, Beijing, in 1644. In this moment of vulnerability, the Manchus, under the leadership of Emperor Shunzhi, seized the opportunity to invade China. The Qing forces entered Beijing and effectively replaced the fallen Ming dynasty, marking the beginning of the Qing rule over China.
