  Authored in 1834 by David Crockett (1786–1836), with some editorial assistance from his congressional colleague from Kentucky, Thomas Chilton, the Narrative of the Life of David Crockett of the State of Tennessee is one of the most significant documents of the American pioneer experience in the first half of the nineteenth century. It describes the author's life from his first memories in eastern Tennessee through his progressive moves westward, his participation in the Creek War, his hunting experiences, and his political service in the Tennessee House of Representatives and the U.S. Congress. The book closes with Crockett's reelection to his final term in Congress (1833–1835), shortly before his fateful journey to Texas and his death at the Alamo in 1836.

  The origins of papyrus as a writing material can be traced to the need for a flexible and lightweight medium that could be used for documentation, record-keeping, and artistic purposes. Ancient Egyptians discovered that the inner pith of the papyrus plant could be cut into strips and laid in a crisscross pattern, pressed together, and dried to form sheets. These sheets were then smoothed and polished, making them suitable for inscribing with hieroglyphs, hieratic script, or later, the demotic script. Over time, the process of papyrus production became more refined, and its use spread to neighboring regions, influencing other ancient civilizations. 
  Early uses of papyrus were predominantly for religious and administrative purposes. Royal decrees, religious texts, and tomb inscriptions were often written on papyrus scrolls. As Egyptian society advanced, the role of papyrus expanded to include personal letters, legal documents, and works of literature, cementing its place as the primary medium for writing in the ancient world. The papyrus scroll became the preferred format for long documents, with scrolls of varying lengths used to record everything from medical texts to astronomical observations.

  John R. Brinkley (July 8, 1885 – May 26, 1942) became nationally known as the "goat gland doctor" for his controversial medical practice that promised virility for his male patients. He was a pioneer in radio broadcasting and advertising, as he promoted his services to his large listening audience. Despite detractors and critics in the medical community thoroughly discrediting his methods, Brinkley operated clinics and hospitals in several states for two decades. When opposition from the organized medical community resulted in revocation of his radio and medical license he turned to politics, with two failed runs for the governorship of Kansas. Brinkley's rise to fame and fortune was as precipitous as his eventual fall: At the height of his career he had amassed millions of dollars; yet he died sick and nearly penniless, as a result of a number of malpractice, wrongful death and fraud suits brought against him.
