Beschreibung

In "The Gallic War," Julius Caesar presents a pivotal account of his military campaign against the Gallic tribes from 58 to 50 BCE. Written in a concise, dry, and objective literary style, Caesar's reports are characterized by their clarity, vivid descriptions, and strategic insight, reflecting the conventions of Roman historiography. His first-person narrative offers not only a record of battles and troop movements but also illuminates the complex interactions between the Romans and various tribes, revealing the social and political dynamics of Gaul during a transformative period in Roman history. Julius Caesar, a prominent statesman and military general, composed this work during his time away from Rome, likely to justify his actions and bolster his political standing back home. His dual role as both observer and participant grants unique authority to his narrative. As someone deeply immersed in the intricacies of power, ambition, and governance, Caesar's keen insights into leadership and military strategy emerge as focal themes throughout the text. "The Gallic War" is an essential read for anyone interested in military history, politics, or Roman culture. Caesar's articulate first-hand account not only documents a significant epoch but also serves as a timeless reflection on the nature of power, ambition, and the complexities of leadership.

Urban crime is a complex and pervasive issue that affects millions of people across the globe. As cities continue to grow and evolve, the challenges of maintaining safety and reducing criminal activity become more pressing. Urban areas, often characterized by dense populations, diverse social dynamics, and limited resources, can create an environment where crime thrives. These cities face a unique set of circumstances that contribute to the rise of criminal activities, ranging from petty theft to violent crimes. The relationship between urban crime and safety is multifaceted and requires a comprehensive understanding of its causes, impact, and the strategies necessary for effective crime prevention.
The rise in urban crime can be attributed to several factors, including social inequality, economic disparity, inadequate law enforcement, and environmental design issues. High levels of poverty, unemployment, and lack of education in certain neighborhoods often serve as breeding grounds for criminal behavior. In many urban centers, individuals with limited opportunities turn to crime as a means of survival or social mobility. The breakdown of social networks and a lack of community cohesion further exacerbate these challenges, making it difficult to foster a sense of security and mutual trust among residents.
Urban crime also places a significant strain on local law enforcement and public resources. Police departments are often overwhelmed by the volume and diversity of crimes that occur in cities. Additionally, urban environments may present logistical challenges for law enforcement agencies, such as limited manpower, insufficient technology, and high crime concentrations in certain areas. This can lead to delayed responses, reduced effectiveness, and strained relations between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

Deliberate mischaracterization of political opponents and their policies has always been a part of politics; however, lying, dishonesty, and distortion of the facts remain morally wrong and have the potential to obstruct important political interests. For example, a false or misleading claim publicized about an election candidate may lead someone to lose an election that they might otherwise have won. So, does—and should—the law seek to provide protection from the risk of this happening?

In attempting to answer this question, Jeremy Horder draws a key distinction between what is called "political viewpoint" fraud and "electoral participation" fraud. In the interests of protecting freedom of speech, false or misleading claims (disinformation) involving political viewpoint content should be tolerated, not only by the criminal law but also by the internet platforms which host political content. By contrast, in the interests of preserving the integrity of democratic electoral processes, disinformation involving electoral participation information should be prohibited by the criminal law and censored by internet platforms. This book explains how the criminal law in various jurisdictions frequently prohibits false or misleading political claims falling into both categories of disinformation, instead of concentrating on electoral participation fraud.

Shiloh: The History of the First...

After Union General Ulysses S. Grant captured Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in early 1862, Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston, widely considered the Confederacy’s best general, concentrated his forces in northern Georgia and prepared for a major offensive that culminated with the biggest battle of the war to that point, the Battle of Shiloh. On the morning of April 6, Johnston directed an all out attack on Grant’s army around Shiloh Church, and though Grant’s men had been encamped there, they had failed to create defensive fortifications or earthworks. They were also badly caught by surprise. With nearly 45,000 Confederates attacking, Johnston’s army began to steadily push Grant’s men back toward the river.
The Battle of Shiloh lasted two days, but the battle over the battle had just begun. Grant’s army had just won the biggest battle in the history of North America, with nearly 24,000 combined casualties among the Union and Confederate forces. Usually the winner of a major battle is hailed as a hero, but Grant was hardly a winner at Shiloh. The Battle of Shiloh took place before costlier battles at places like Antietam and Gettysburg, so the extent of the casualties at Shiloh shocked the nation. Moreover, at Shiloh the casualties were viewed as needless; Grant was pilloried for allowing the Confederates to take his forces by surprise, as well as the failure to build defensive earthworks and fortifications, which nearly resulted in a rout of his army. Speculation again arose that Grant had a drinking problem, and some even assumed he was drunk during the battle. Though the Union won, it was largely viewed that their success owed to the heroics of General Sherman in rallying the men and Don Carlos Buell arriving with his army, and General Buell was happy to receive the credit at Grant’s expense.

In this manual you will find a series of tips and mental models to think better while avoiding the most common cognitive biases and logical fallacies, how and why we are persuaded by people and advertisements and how to make better decisions.

After reading this book, you will realize that an important percentage of the people you hang out with (or hear about) are subject to reasoning errors, but this does not depend on intelligence (or at least marginally) but on habits, partial information and how our mind has been structured during evolution but, above all, it depends on our tendency towards cognitive economy: having to decide on the basis of rational reasoning requires longer times and many resources. In order not to overload our brains and to be able to cope with such continuous requests in a reasonable time without being exhausted, we are forced to use intuition and some cognitive (heuristic) shortcuts. This way of reasoning, however, makes us more likely to choose in an associative, metaphorical and casual way, more rarely in a probabilistic way.
    Who is this book for?

To people who want to improve their ability to argue, to those who want to know the most common cognitive biases and logical fallacies but, also, to those who want to deepen persuasion, decision making, logic and some curiosities about the human mind. This book starts from the basics and, vertically, deepens most of the topics covered.
