Synopsis

Julia Kelly met a charismatic and successful artist, Charlie Whisker, while she was working on her first novel. He was twenty years older than her. Their relationship was passionate and extraordinary; each of them inspired the other. Their friends were writers, artists and rock stars; they lived a glamorous life of exhibitions, parties and concerts. They became parents to a daughter they adored.

But Charlie suddenly changed, becoming hopelessly forgetful, angry and confused. This is an unbearably honest, unsentimental and heartbreaking description of a brilliant man's mental disintegration and its effects on his family. Charlie's disturbing behaviour is described in a series of terrible, understated revelations.

An unforgettable telling of a story that will be familiar to many thousands of people in the UK and Ireland.

Are you a shy person? I was once myself, and I want to share what I have learned from my own life.
    • Quality is more important than quantity when selecting friends.
    • Social skills are as simple as smiling and saying hi to people.
    • Discernment is key to picking the right people to build you up, not tear you down. Some people have poor intentions.
    • Standing up for yourself is the single most important thing you can do.
    • Talking to people or standing up for yourself is akin to the feeling of jumping out of an airplane…scary but exhilarating and worth it!
    • Cherish old and true friends.
    • Try activities you actually love. You will meet so many people!
    • Passion overrides shyness. Find what you love and you will forget to be shy!
    • Embrace your introversion; there are a lot of advantages to being an introvert. But don’t let shyness confine you.
    • Learn to be comfortable on your own. Then you have the confidence to attract other people.
    • Don’t judge people by their outward appearance. Get to know them first.
    • Work on finding your true values. Experimentation to find them out is OK. Then stick to those values.
    • Always, always, always be yourself or your friendships will fall apart.
    • Mental illness and bad experiences can set your progress back but you will bounce back.
    • And more!

Everyone leaves death row. Few leave it alive.
During the summer of 1984 twenty-year-old Tommy Hamilton, the product of a deprived childhood in rural Alabama, shoots and kills his boss. Convicted of murder, Tommy is sentenced to death. Before facing the electric chair, one final appeal offers the chance to save Tommy's life, if only his two Chicago-based lawyers and a nun from Alabama can prove he is not legally guilty...even if he is not truly innocent.
Tommy fears an incarcerated life more than the electric chair. As limited as his intellect is, he realizes that even a reduced life sentence without the possibility of parole is-like electrocution-a death-in-prison sentence. If his lawyers are unable to get him out, Tommy professes a willingness to be executed.
Despite a material witness allegedly committing suicide and their client escaping from jail during the court proceedings, the lawyers present evidence that perjury tainted both Tommy's conviction and death sentence. Nevertheless, the judge assigned to determine Tommy's fate maintains that "Hamilton may deserve the death penalty and he may yet receive it."
Summary Judgment is the fascinating true crime story told by one of Tommy's lawyers that reveals how this life-and-death case unfolded in real time.
