Beschreibung

Facing the Flag is a gripping techno-thriller and political adventure by Jules Verne that explores the dangerous intersection of scientific genius, nationalism, and unchecked ambition. At the heart of the novel is Thomas Roch, a brilliant but unstable inventor who has created a devastating new weapon—an explosive force so powerful it could alter the balance of world power. When Roch's invention is dismissed and ridiculed, his wounded pride becomes a vulnerability that sinister forces are eager to exploit.

Abducted by pirates and taken to a secret stronghold hidden deep within the Caribbean, Roch finds himself surrounded by criminals who seek to use his invention for global domination. As nations unknowingly edge closer to catastrophe, a lone French engineer, Simon Hart, works from within the pirates' lair to thwart their plans and save the world from destruction.

Blending cutting-edge science with political intrigue, Facing the Flag is both a thrilling adventure and a cautionary tale about the ethical responsibilities of scientists and the perils of blind patriotism. Often regarded as Jules Verne's prophetic response to the rise of modern warfare and weapons of mass destruction, the novel remains strikingly relevant today. With its fast-paced narrative, imaginative technology, and moral depth, Facing the Flag stands as a powerful example of Verne's ability to anticipate the future while delivering timeless storytelling.

Fourteen degrees below zero—cold enough to freeze the soul.
Lewis Ingraham is cold. He’s lost his wife to cancer, his executive career, his once sure grip on the world around him. All that he can hold on to is his beautiful daughter Jay, a brilliant student who has become a struggling single mother. But he sees that even Jay is starting to slip away from him, in favor of Stephen, her self-important boyfriend. This time Lewis is going to fight back.
But when Lewis takes out his fury on Stephen, he ignites a chain reaction of violence. Now winter is bearing down on Minnesota. Desire, guilt, and rage are swirling in the snow. And a heinous crime is about to lead three people down a steep and unforgiving slope—into a realm of cold, hard truth.
Set in a chillingly barren milieu and invoking comparisons to Donald Westlake’s bestselling classic The Ax, 14 Degrees Below Zero is a stunning, provocative, and utterly unforgettable experience in psychological suspense and American noir—fashioned from the heat of ordinary lives.

"It was 'the game'—the struggle of the men, the colorful, brutal, and fascinating game."

Joe Fleming is a clean-living young man with a bright future and a woman he loves, Genevieve. But Joe has a secret passion: he is a prize-fighter. On the eve of their wedding, Joe agrees to one final bout—one last time to play "the game." Genevieve, initially repulsed by the violence, agrees to watch the fight from a secret vantage point, hoping to understand the strange, masculine world that captivates her fiancé. What follows is a visceral, blow-by-blow account of a match that serves as a profound meditation on the animalistic nature of man and the tragic interference of fate.

The "Red Muscle" Philosophy: London applies his trademark naturalism to the sport of boxing. He describes the physical "machinery" of the fighters with scientific precision, portraying the ring not just as a sport, but as an arena where the "blood-heritage" of prehistoric ancestors resurfaces in the modern world.

A Clash of Worlds: The novella highlights the stark contrast between the "woman-world" of the home and the "man-world" of the ring. Through Genevieve's eyes, the reader experiences the shocking transition from the gentle Joe she knows to the fierce, efficient athlete he becomes under the lights. It is a story about the irresistible pull of competition and the price one pays to be a champion.

Kenneth Grahame was born on 8th March 1859 in Edinburgh.
At age 5 his mother succumbed to puerperal fever. His father, who had a drinking problem, now sent his 4 children to live with their grandmother at her large house in Cookham, Berkshire. Here the children lived in large open grounds next to the river. These early experiences would in later years, be retold in his writing through a myriad of characters.
Grahame loved being a pupil at St Edward's School, Oxford and wanted to enroll at the university there but his guardian demurred on account of the cost.
Instead, a banking career was chosen for him, starting in 1879 at the Bank of England, where he rose steadily to the rank of its Secretary until retiring, with a pension, in 1908 due to ill health.
Alongside his commercial career Grahame had written and published various stories and essays in several periodicals. Some were anthologized as ‘Pagan Papers’ in 1893, and two years later ‘The Golden Age’ and later still ‘Dream Days’ and its masterpiece ‘The Reluctant Dragon’ became part of many home libraries. His ability to view life through the lens of a young and curious child was superb, enabling the reader to easily identify with the character.
Grahame married Elspeth Thomson in 1899 and they had one child; Alastair, born semi-blind and plagued by health problems. In a heart-rending tragedy he would later take his own life whilst attending Oxford University in 1920.
In 1908 Grahame reworked many of the bedtime stories he had fashioned for his son into the enduring favourite; ‘The Wind in the Willows’, describing the heart-warming adventures of Mr Toad and his friends.
Kenneth Grahame died in Pangbourne, Berkshire, on 6th July 1932.
