Robert Lopez's grandfather Sixto was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, in 1904, immigrating to the United States in the 1920s, where he lived in a racially proportioned apartment complex in East New York, Brooklyn, until his death in 1987. The family's efforts to assimilate within their new homeland led to the near complete erasure of their heritage, culture, and language within two generations. Little is known of Sixto—he may have been a longshoreman, a painter, or a boxer, but was most likely a longshoreman—or why he originally decided to leave Puerto Rico, other than that he was a meticulously slow eater who played the standup keyboard and guitar, and enjoyed watching baseball. Through family recollection, the constant banter volleyed across nets within Brooklyn's diverse tennis community, as well as an imagined fabulist history drawn from Sixto's remembered traits, in Dispatches From Puerto Nowhere: An American Story of Assimilation and Erasure, Robert Lopez paints a compassionate portrait of family that attempts to bridge the past to the present, and reclaim a heritage threatened by assimilation and erasure.Zum Buch
Known as the godfather of the civil rights movement, Howard Thurman served as a spiritual adviser to Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders and activists in the 1960s. Thurman championed silence, contemplation, common unity, and nonviolence as powerful dimensions of social change. But Dr. Lerita Coleman Brown didn't learn about him during her years of spiritual-direction training. Only when a friend heard of her longing to encounter the work of Black contemplatives did she finally learn about Thurman, his mystical spirituality, and his liberating ethic. In What Makes You Come Alive, Brown beckons listeners into their own apprenticeship with Thurman. Brown walks with us through Thurman's inimitable life and commitments as he summons us into centering down, encountering the natural world, paying attention to sacred synchronicity, unleashing inner authority, and recognizing the genius of the religion of Jesus. We learn from Thurman's resilience in the psychologically terrorizing climate of the Jim Crow South, his encounters with Quakers and with Mahatma Gandhi, and his sense of being guided by the Spirit. Each chapter illuminates an aspect of Thurman's work and includes reflection questions and spiritual practices.Zum Buch
Long before creating Covet by Christos, the world’s leading livestreamer of all things luxury, future founder and CEO Christos Garkinos grew up in Detroit as the gay son of Greek immigrants and started working in his parents’ diner at the age of four. Seeking a bigger life post-college, Garkinos took a job under Richard Branson in the mid-90’s heyday of Virgin Megastores. Beginning to rub shoulders with A-list celebrities, he embarked on a 25-year fashion and media career with many highs and lows. Covet the Comeback lays bare the entire story—as well as all the things that can get swept beneath the red carpet. Garkinos reinvented the resale luxury market and was coined the “Robin Hood of Fashion.” A breakout role on Bravo TV soon followed, as did a lucrative Home Shopping Network stint—though with it came countless coke-fueled parties and the slow descent into addiction. When Garkinos’ hard-earned empire crumbled, he realized he was near financial ruin. By the time Garkinos got sober, the world was in the midst of a global pandemic—and, despite the fact that he was driving around in a Range Rover, he was completely broke. A chance meeting where he uttered the word “trudging” led to him starting a trunk show business that went virtual and has since brought in more than 100 million dollars in sales worldwide. For future business moguls and dreamers of all kinds, Covet the Comeback is far more than a must-read redemption story. It’s a masterclass in learning that we all fall down—and how to get back up in style.Zum Buch
