Synopsis

In "The Book of the Feet," Joseph Sparkes Hall embarks on a meticulous exploration of the anatomy and symbolic significance of the foot throughout various cultures and epochs. Hall's literary style is characterized by a blend of empirical detail and poetic reflection, drawing on both scientific observation and anecdotal evidence to illuminate the multifaceted role of feet in human existence. The work situates itself within a broader literary context that interrogates the intersection of body, identity, and culture, elevating an often-overlooked subject into a profound narrative about the human experience. Joseph Sparkes Hall, a prominent thinker in the realms of anatomy and philosophy, contributes his interdisciplinary expertise to this unique volume. His background in both the sciences and humanism has equipped him with a keen sensitivity to the invisible narratives that persist beneath the surface. Hall's dedication to illuminating the human condition is evident in this work, as he seeks to connect the physicality of feet with themes of mobility, social status, and even spirituality. The Roosevelt New Deal was a series of domestic programs and initiatives launched by President Franklin D. Roosevelt shortly after he assumed office in 1933. At the time, the United States faced one of the worst economic crises in its history, with unemployment rates exceeding 25%, banks failing, and businesses closing down. In response to this crisis, Roosevelt sought to implement a range of policies to address the immediate needs of the people and the underlying causes of the economic downturn.
The New Deal was based on three primary goals: relief, recovery, and reform. Relief measures aimed to provide immediate assistance to those most affected by the Great Depression, including the unemployed, farmers, and the elderly. Recovery efforts focused on restoring the economy and creating jobs. At the same time, reform measures sought to address the structural issues that had contributed to the crisis, such as the lack of financial regulation and social safety nets.
Some of the critical initiatives of the New Deal included the creation of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), which employed young men to work on public projects such as road building and conservation; the establishment of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which provided jobs and training to millions of unemployed workers; and the implementation of agricultural subsidies to support struggling farmers.
The New Deal also saw significant changes in the regulation of the financial sector, including the creation of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to insure bank deposits and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to regulate the stock market. Other reforms included establishing social security, which provided retirement benefits to elderly Americans, and the National Labor Relations Act, which protected workers' rights to unionize.

Between 1917 and 1921, twenty years before the Holocaust began, an estimated 100,000 to 250,000 Jews were murdered in anti-Jewish pogroms across the Ukraine. Lisa grew up transfixed by her grandmother Channa’s stories about her family being forced to flee their hometown of Stavishche, as armies and bandit groups raided village after village, killing Jewish residents. Channa described a perilous three-year journey through Russia and Romania, led at first by an American who had snuck into the Ukraine to save his immediate family and ended up leading an exodus of nearly eighty people to safety. With almost no published sources to validate her grandmother’s tales, Lisa embarked on an incredible journey to tell Channa’s story, forging connections with archivists around the world to find elusive documents to fill in the gaps of what happened in Stavishche. She also tapped into connections closer to home, gathering testimonies from her grandmother’s relatives, childhood friends, and neighbors. The result is a moving historical family narrative that speaks to universal human themes—the resilience and hope of ordinary people surviving the ravages of history and human cruelty. With the growing passage of time, it is unlikely that we will see another family saga emerge so richly detailing this forgotten time period. Tears Over Russia eloquently proves that true life is sometimes more compelling than fiction.

We Jews wrongly believe we're immune to alcoholism and addiction—instead, individuals, families, and communities are suffering because of the stigmas surrounding addiction and recovery in the Jewish world.

"Is the 12 step program suitable for Jews? In this book Michael Levin shows with learning, sensitivity and wisdom why the answer is a resounding 'Yes.'" —Rabbi David Wolpe

"Shikkur is a goy." This Yiddish phrase means "Only Gentiles can be alcoholics," but it's not true. Jews suffer from alcoholism and addiction at the same rate as everyone else in society. Due to the stigma surrounding addiction in our community, people are dying unnecessarily . . . because they believe they can't get help. Jews and Booze attacks the stigmas surrounding addiction and recovery in our world.

    Introduction to ADHD in Women
Though ADHD is more commonly diagnosed in boys and men, it affects girls and women as well. A recent study found that girls with ADHD are more likely to have anxiety and mood disorders, as well as problems with social interactions. They are also more likely to have lower self-esteem and problems with body image.
There is still a lot we don't know about how ADHD affects women and girls. In particular, we need more research on how best to treat the unique symptoms that affect them. However, there are some treatments that have been shown to be effective for both genders. One such treatment is mindfulness meditation.Treatment for ADHD in women
While medication may be the most talked about treatment for ADHD, there are other options that can be helpful. Treatment for ADHD in women often includes therapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and/or mindfulness meditation. In a landmark study at the UCLA in 2007, 24 adults with ADHD took part in an 8 week programme of regular guided meditations. Participants reported improvements in their anxiety and depressive symptoms along with improvements in ADHD symptoms and in test performance on tasks measuring attention and cognitive inhibition.
My hope is that through regularly listening to the guided meditations in this audiobook, you can also benefit from an improvement in your symptoms.Guided meditation book for ADHD and women
There are 4 meditations in this audiobook, which I hope will help you relax, focus and live a happier life. The topics are selected to be a cross section of relaxation, and mindfulness practice, that, through regular practice and usage, could help you, step by step, manage your ADHD.

    Life's Too Short to Pretend...

We can't just be done with religion, argues David Dark. The fact of religion is the fact of us. Religion is the witness of everything we're up to—for better or worse.

David Dark is one of today's most respected thinkers, public intellectuals, and cultural critics at the intersection of faith and culture. Since its original release, Dark's Life's Too Short to Pretend You're Not Religious has become essential reading for those engaged in the conversation on religion in contemporary American society. Now, Dark returns to his classic text and offers us a revised, expanded, and reframed edition that reflects a more expansive understanding, employs inclusive language, and tackles the most pressing issues of the day.

With the same keen powers of cultural observation, candor, and wit audiences have come to know and love, Dark weaves in current themes around the pandemic and vaccine responses, Black Lives Matter, the #MeToo and #ChurchToo movements, critical race theory, and more. By looking intentionally at our weird religious background (we all have one), he helps us acknowledge the content of our everyday existence—the good, the bad, and the glaringly inconsistent. When we make peace with the idea of being religious, we can more practically envision an undivided life.
