Beschreibung

In "The Vanishing Race: The Last Great Indian Council," Joseph K. Dixon presents a poignant exploration of Native American life and culture during a tumultuous period in U.S. history. Through vivid descriptions and immersive narrative, Dixon documents the last great assembly of Indian tribes, encapsulating their traditions, struggles, and the encroaching influence of Western civilization. His ethnographic approach and eloquent prose serve not only to chronicle this monumental event but also to illuminate the complexities of identity and resilience among indigenous peoples. This work occupies a unique space in early 20th-century literature, reflecting contemporary concerns about cultural preservation amid rapid change. Joseph K. Dixon, a prominent figure in the early conservation movement and an advocate for Native American rights, was deeply influenced by his own experiences and interactions with Native communities. His background as a photographer and journalist allowed him to gain a nuanced perspective on the lives of these often-misunderstood individuals. Through this book, Dixon seeks to serve as a bridge, aiming to foster understanding and respect toward Native cultures while capturing their moment of historical significance before they faced further decline. "The Vanishing Race" is a must-read for anyone interested in Native American history, culture, and the dynamics of cultural endurance. Dixon's meticulous research and passionate narrative compel readers to reflect on the broader implications of colonization and the importance of preserving cultural legacies. This book not only stands as a historical document but also as a powerful call to honor and recognize the rich heritage of indigenous peoples.

The Book of Tea by Kakuzo Okakura is a lyrical and philosophical exploration of tea and its profound role in Japanese culture, aesthetics, and spirituality. Written in English, it uses the Japanese tea ceremony as a lens to introduce Western readers to Zen, Taoism, and the ideals of simplicity, harmony, and reverence for beauty. Okakura contrasts Eastern and Western thought, celebrating the quiet wisdom of the "way of tea" as a form of art and ethical living. More than a treatise on tea, it is a poetic meditation on humility, impermanence, and the soul of a nation. A timeless classic of cultural insight.

A contemporary look at Albert Einstein's classic call for socialism

First published more than seventy-five years ago in the inaugural issue of Monthly Review: An Independent Socialist Magazine, Albert Einstein's "Why Socialism?" is an unheralded classic. Written during the McCarthyite witch-hunt in the United States, it constituted an act of defiance, making a case for socialism unrivaled in its time or ours. Yet, its very existence has been an embarrassment to an establishment which has continually sought to downplay the significance of his iconoclastic essay, together with Einstein's socialism itself.

This volume includes Einstein's essay along with a detailed commentary on his essay by Monthly Review editor, John Bellamy Foster. Foster's introduction tells the story of Einstein's life-long commitment to socialism and the events leading to the publication of "Why Socialism?" and contextualizes the importance of his essay as we enter a time of planetary crisis and new threats of world war. Over the three-quarters of century since its publication, "Why Socialism?" is one of those rare statements whose power has only grown, reaching untold numbers of readers over the years. It is of crucial importance that―for the sake of the future of humanity―Einstein's message continues to proliferate.

»ACT 2 | DEBRISM« is the first release on Martin Hossbach’s newly-founded sub-label Martin Hossbach Word which will release readings and audio plays only. Scott King recorded »ACT 2 | DEBRISM« using his dictaphone in one afternoon at home.

    King writes:
»On the afternoon of February 28th, during the long, locked-down winter of 2020/21, I sat at my desk and looked through the files on my laptop. I have hundreds of incomplete ‘projects’, thousands of ‘emails to self’ - ‘new idea for a novel, ‘new idea for a public sculpture’, ‘new idea for an opera’, and so on. None of these ideas ever got made, because somewhere along the line, I had lost the ability to ‘just do’. What went wrong?

For as long as I have known it, I have always loved and believed in the famous Kippenberger maxim: ‘Heute denken, morgen fertig’ (‘Think today, be finished tomorrow’). Though my own maxim had become much closer to: ‘Heute denken, morgen denken. Und übermorgen auch’ (‘Think today, think tomorrow. And the next day’). I had become so reliant on the skills of others (‘makers’) – and worse – even more reliant on the opinions of others (‘gatekeepers’) that my output had dwindled to virtually nothing. This had to stop, so I set myself a challenge: RECORD A SPOKEN WORD ALBUM THIS AFTERNOON. I also set myself some rules: Must not be edited. Must be done at this desk (album cover included). Must not ask for any help. Must not worry about what anyone else thinks (they are wankers).

I bought a dozen cans of pale ale, found my dictaphone, sat at my desk and began. I had no idea what I was going to say, but whatever I did say would be ‘the album’.

By 6pm, I had finished, and I was elated – what I’d recorded might be shit, I didn’t care – because for the first time in many years, I had ‘just done’ something. ‘Heute denken, heute fertig’ (‘Think today, finish today’).
