Summary

In "Nostromo: A Tale of the Seaboard," Joseph Conrad intricately weaves a narrative that delves into themes of imperialism, capitalism, and human obsession against the backdrop of a fictional South American country, Costaguana. The novel employs a modernist style rich with symbolism and a fragmented narrative structure, reflecting the complexities of colonial exploitation and the moral ambiguity of its characters. Conrad's exploration of the socio-political landscape of the late 19th century is underscored by evocative descriptions and a profound psychological depth, making the text a seminal piece in the canon of colonial literature. Joseph Conrad, born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski in 1857, drew from his own experiences as a sailor and his Eastern European roots to craft narratives that challenge conventional perspectives. His time spent in various foreign lands and his encounters with different cultures profoundly influenced his worldview, leading him to interrogate the consequences of European imperialism. "Nostromo," published in 1904, is seen as a culmination of these influences, critically addressing the moral fabric of the age and the dark underbelly of economic greed. Recommended for readers seeking a provocative exploration of human motives and the ethical dilemmas of colonialism, "Nostromo" remains a timeless work. Conrad's penetrating insights and vivid storytelling encourage readers to reflect critically on historical narratives and their implications, making this unabridged deluxe edition an essential addition to any literary collection.

Mayer André Marcel Schwob was born in Chaville, Hauts-de-Seine, France on 23rd August 1867 into a cultivated Jewish family.

As a child he devoured the works of Poe and Stevenson in French and then again in English. His attachment to the bizarre and dark was already forming.

His education at the Lycée of Nantes earned him the 1st Prize for Excellence. In 1881, he was in Paris with his maternal uncle to study at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand. Schwob quickly developed his multilingual abilities and then studied philology and Sanscrit at the École pratique des hautes études before completing his military service in Vannes with the artillery.

After completing a Bachelor of Arts in 1888 he became a professional journalist and worked for the Phare de la Loire, the Événement and L'Écho de Paris.

The 1890’s marked his establishment as a brilliant writer with the publication of six short story collections.

He fell ill in 1896 with a chronic, incurable intestinal disorder. He also suffered recurring bouts of influenza and pneumonia. Intestinal surgery was given several times, at first with success but, by 1900, after two more surgeries, he was told that nothing more could be done for him. Schwob now existed on kefir and fermented milk.

By the turn of the century, despite failing health, and often too ill to write, he embarked on several long travels, including to Vailima in the South Pacific where his literary hero Stevenson had died.

Schwob was regarded as a symbolist writer and a ‘precursor of Surrealism’. He wrote over a hundred short stories, journalistic articles, essays, biographies, literary reviews and analysis, translations and plays.

Marcel Schwob died on 26th February 1905 of Pneumonia. He was 37.

When the New Mexico territory is annexed by the United States in the mid-1800's, the Catholic Church decides it is time to re-assert its authority in the region which, due to centuries of neglect, is now a haven for corrupt priests. The Vatican chooses Father Jean Marie Latour, a French Jesuit living in Ohio, to accomplish this task and, soon after elevating him to bishop, sends him on his journey into the Wild West. What follows is an epic, forty year tale of hardship, challenge and triumph as Bishop Latour slowly makes his way to Santa Fe, enduring bitter cold and blistering heat, battles corruption in the new territory and, ultimately, wins the respect of the people of Santa Fe and brings order to the Church in New Mexico. Hailed as a triumph when it was released in 1927, Willa Cather's "Death Comes for the Archbishop" has become a beloved literary classic and it is presented here in its original and unabridged format.
